It is 4,300 miles (6,000 kilometers) southwest of France and about 370 miles (592 km) north of Venezuela. The main islands of Guadeloupe are situated between the island of Montserrat to the north and the island republic of Dominica to the South. In contrast, Grande-Terre is a low-lying, limestone island with hills no higher than 490 feet (148 meters) and no rivers. Coral reefs protect its wide, white-sand beaches. Guadeloupe has two seasons. The dry season, sometimes called the "Creole lent", lasts from October through May. The remainder of the year is the rainy season. Hurricanes frequently blow up from the south during the rainy season and have damaged much property over theyears. Basse-Terre has many hardwood forests with valuable trees. Coffee, vanilla, bananas, and cacao also grow there. Farmers cultivate sugarcane on the plains of Grande-Terre and raise cattle, sheep, goats and pigs in the highlands. Wildlife is not abundant, as the mongoose, a small Asian rodent originally imported to kill snakes, has killed many native species. Continue Main Menu
