In 1804, Haiti became the second nation in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States, to win complete independence. Starting in 1986 there were several brief attempts at civilian democracy, each terminated by a military coup. In September 1991, Jean-Bertrand Aristide was forced to flee the country only nine months after becoming the first freely elected president in Haiti's history. The United States and the Organization of American States responded with a trade embargo, and in 1993 a UN-sponsored oil embargo was imposed. An accord in 1993 providing for Aristide's return was repudiated by the army, which used terrorist violence to maintain power.

Haiti history might like to shed some light on the fascinating country presented to us today. It was the very first nation in Latin America to gain its independence from any other Empire. So what makes this nation so special and can Haiti history tell us more? It would seem as though the nation began life in a normal enough fashion. It was first inhabited by the Arawak Indians like many other Caribbean islands. There are many artifacts remaining from this island and a good economy was established in the country as well as its subsidiaries. Sir Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Hispaniola in 1492 and it was thus one of his first discoveries. He claimed the island for Spain and, following a shipwreck, was forced to leave some of his men on the island. They managed to establish a civilization called La Navidad but this was destroyed by American Indians shortly after; they were of course vastly outnumbered. Haiti history was set in gold when it was discovered and the country was hiding a pretty fortune. The Spanish wasted no time at all in exploiting this resource for the good of their Empire. As much of a cliché as this might seem, the Spanish managed to wipe out yet another national population with the infectious diseases which they brought with them. Haiti became slightly more lonely at this point with the population at its lowest point.

In 1804, the Haitians proclaimed that they were the first black republic in the world; however, the road to independence was not easy. The Haitian people revolted against slavery, lived through civil wars, numerous bloody massacres and an oppressive leadership. Haiti is located on the second-largest island of the Caribbean, which it shares with the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic. Haiti's neighbors are the islands of Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. When European colonization began in Haiti during the 15th century, the inhabitants of the land were called Tainos. Within a few decades, ill treatment of the Tainos by the Spanish colonizers and European diseases killed off the Taino population. The island was soon highly populated with black Africans brought there as slaves by the French. This marked the beginning of the population that would make up the nation of Haiti.

The country's longevity as an independent nation in the Western Hemisphere is second only to that of the United States. Over this span of almost two centuries, however, the country has never known a period free of tyranny, repression, political conflict, racial animosity, and economic hardship. Haiti, the first black republic in modern times, sprang directly to self-governance from French colonialism, a system that had a profound impact on the nation. Haiti's colonial origins had demonstrated that an illiterate and impoverished majority could be ruled by a repressive elite. The slaveholding system had established the efficacy of violence and coercion in controlling others, and the racial prejudice inherent in the colonial system survived under the black republic. A lightskinned elite assumed a disproportionate share of political and economic power. The chaotic and personalistic nature of Haitian political culture combined with chronic underdevelopment to provide fertile ground for a succession of despots, strongmen, and dictators. Even the few national leaders whose election apparently reflected popular sentiment, such as Dumarsais Estimé (1946-50) and François Duvalier (1957-71), rejected constitutional procedures in favor of retaining personal power. The popular revolt that deposed President for life Jean-Claude Duvalier (1971-86) demonstrated the Haitian people's rejection of parasitic despotism. At the same time, however, the revolt reaffirmed another lesson of Haitian history: violence has often been the only effective route to change.
