Hebrew is a member of the Canaanite group of Semitic languages. It was the language of the early Jews, but from 586 BC it started to be replaced by Aramaic. By 70 AD use of Hebrew as an everyday language had largely ceased, but it continued to be used for literary and religious functions, as well as a lingua franca among Jews from different countries. During the mid-19th century the first efforts were made to revive Hebrew as a everyday language. One man who played a major role in these efforts was Eliezer Ben Yehuda (1858-1922), who was the first to make exclusive use of Hebrew in his home, and encouraged the use of Hebrew among others, as well as its use in schools. Today Hebrew is spoken by some 5 million people in Israel, where it is an official language along with Arabic. and a further 2 to 3 million people speak the language in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, Panama, the UK and USA.

It is not spoken in its pure form today, although it is often studied by Jews Christian theologians linguists , and Israeli archaeologists to help them gain a deeper understanding of the Hebrew Bible and Semitic philology . Classical Hebrew is also generally taught in public schools in Israel Biblical Hebrew and modern Hebrew differ with respect to grammar, vocabulary, and phonology. Although Modern and Biblical Hebrew's grammatical rules often differ, Biblical Hebrew is sometimes used in Modern Hebrew literature, much as archaic and Biblical constructions are used in Modern English literature. Note, the term 'Biblical Hebrew' can sometimes refer to a different dialect, a Medieval Hebrew dialect that the Masoretes used when adding vowel-points ( nikkudot ) to the biblical text, to preserve traditional chanting. This Medieval dialect is also known as 'Masoretic Hebrew' or 'Tiberian Hebrew', after Tverya their town of residence in northern Israel. (They don't pay me to say that, and they sell plenty of books I don't use and some I disagree with, but it is an outstanding tool that I use almost daily.) Finally, in the past I've recieved considerable criticism for being so obviously "Mormon", and you will find references to my faith and adherence to the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout the site. I invite you to learn more. When life was less busy I used to entertain the critics it was often fun and a great growing experience for both them and I. Now however my time is too limited and I am sure they will be better served spending their time with real scholars such as my friends at the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research . Simply put they are brilliant and thourough and frankly the critics can't begin to match them in scholarly honesty and completeness. As for me, I know that what I believe is true, because God has revealed it to me just as he has to millions of others, and just as he will to all who ask with pure intent, having demonstrated the prerequisite faith. We come from a position of strength that typically leaves nothing for the most ardent critics to use except for the age-old tactics of ad hominem attacks and dishonesty, but for those who have serious questions whose life goal is not to tear down the faith of others, please know we do have the answers and they are solid. The FAIRLDS website is one of the best resources for you whether you are a critic or a member. For everyone else the mormon.org link below is perfect.

Extractions: HOME IDEAS PEOPLE PLACES ... LINKS Hebrew Root Words Formation of Hebrew Words Common Prefixes and Suffixes Suggestions for Further Reading Level: Intermediate The vast majority of words in the Hebrew language can be boiled down to a three-consonant root word that contains the essence of the word's meaning. Even if you cannot read Hebrew, you will find that you can get some insight into the meaning of the Bible by identifying the roots of words. If you see the same English word in two different places, but different Hebrew roots are used, this may indicate that there is a different shade of meaning. If the same Hebrew root is used in two different places, the words and their meanings are probably related. A substantial amount of rabbinical interpretation of the Bible is derived from the relation between root words. For example, the rabbis concluded that G-d created women with greater intuition and understanding than men, because man was "formed" (yitzer, Gen. 2:7) while woman was "built" (yiben, Gen. 2:22). The root of "built," Beit-Nun-Hei, is very similar to the word "binah" (Beit-Yod-Nun-Hei), meaning understanding, insight or intuition. Similarly, a familiar

Extractions: The Hebrew alphabet is either of two distinct Semitic alphabets - the Early Hebrew and the Classical, or Square, Hebrew. Hebrew is written from right to left, rather than left to right as in English, so Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and Tav is the last. The Hebrew alphabet is often called the "alefbet," because of its first two letters. The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters. There are two versions of some letters. Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pe and Tzade all are written differently when they appear at the end of a word than when they appear in the beginning or middle of the word. The version used at the end of a word is referred to as Final Kaf, Final Mem, etc. The version of the letter on the left is the final version. In all cases except Final Mem, the final version has a long tail. Like most early Semitic alphabetic writing systems, the alefbet has no vowels. People who are fluent in the language do not need vowels to read Hebrew, and most things written in Hebrew in Israel are written without vowels. However, the rabbis realized the need for aids to pronunciation, so they developed a system of dots and dashes called n'kudot (points). These dots and dashes are written above or below the letter, in ways that do not alter the spacing of the line. Text containing these markings is referred to as "pointed" text.

Extractions: Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... H > Hebrew Language and Literature Hebrew was the language spoken by the ancient Israelites , and in which were composed nearly all of the books of the Old Testament . The name Hebrew as applied to the language is quite recent in Biblical usage, occurring for the first time in the Greek prologue of Ecclesiasticus , about 130 B.C. ( hebraisti , rendered by the Vulgate verba hebraica ). In Isaiah 19:18 , it is designated as the "language of Chanaan ". In other passages ( 2 Kings 17:26 Isaiah 36:11 Nehemiah 13:24 ) it is referred to adverbially as the " Jews' language" ( ioudaisti judaice ). In later times the term "sacred language" was sometimes employed by the Jews to designate the Bible Hebrew in opposition to the "profane language", i.e. the Aramaean dialects which eventually usurped the place of the other as a spoken language. In New-Testament usage the current Aramaic of the time is frequently called Hebrew hebrais dialektos Acts 21:40 ), not in the strict sense of the word, but because it was the dialect in use among the Jews of Palestine.
