    Extractions: Stanford Report, August 11, 1999 The Stanford University Libraries have announced the acquisition of a major collection of manuscripts, letters, photographs and books by John Steinbeck that span more than 100 years of Steinbeck family history. The collection is that of his eldest sister, Esther Steinbeck Rodgers, and was acquired with a lead gift from the Wells Fargo Foundation to the Stanford Libraries. The collection, to be known as the Wells Fargo Steinbeck Collection, will join Stanford's other holdings of Steinbeck books and manuscripts in the Department of Special Collections of the University Libraries. Related Information: Michael A. Keller, university librarian, noted that Stanford already has one of the most important archives on John Steinbeck in the country, and this new acquisition will broaden the scope of its collections and allow for further research on Steinbeck's work and his place on the American literary scene. "The collection significantly strengthens Stanford's reputation as a premier repository for research materials on John Steinbeck," Keller said. Byron Scordelis, president of Wells Fargo for the Bay Area, said that the collection is "an important gift to all of California and a wonderful way for Wells Fargo to contribute to the celebration of California's sesquicentennial, given John Steinbeck's eminent and well-deserved reputation as one of a succession of California's stunning sons in the literary pantheon."

    Extractions: Information Literacy Blog A Brief History of Library Instruction in the United States of America Michael Lorenzen (This paper originally appeared in Illinois Libraries in 2001.) It is likely that librarians have always to a limited degree been involved in classroom teaching. For example, it is hard to imagine that the librarians at the Great Library of Alexandria did not assemble from time to time small groups of students and visiting scholars and instruct them on the proper handling and use of the valuable scrolls that resided there. Throughout most of history librarians have been members of other professions (the clergy and scholars of various disciplines) who took on the additional duty of maintaining the library collection of their institutions. It is highly likely that these individuals introduced library concepts into their regular lectures pertaining to their area of expertise. Unfortunately, no written record appears to exist detailing how library instruction in the classroom was carried out or how often it was conducted. German library literature records various examples of library instruction from the 17th to 19th Centuries. Ewert (1986) gave a summary of this literature and detailed where the library instruction occurred, who generally was conducting it, and what was covered. Unfortunately, the article was written in communist East Germany and most of the examples are tied into how these instruction sessions ultimately aided the climate of revolution against capitalism. This makes it difficult to determine what the curriculum of the classes was or how many non-revolutionary library instruction examples may have occurred. Regardless, it shows that a tradition of library instruction in academic institutions had developed in Germany prior to the its origins in the United States in the late 19th Century. As the United State's higher education system is based on the German model, this may have influenced the earliest academic library instruction practitioners in the US.

Sorensen Part 1: What's Past is Prologue In 1800, the U.S. Congress established a library in the Capitol in Washington to serve the references needs of federal legislators. In 1839, the "People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly," met in Vandalia and created a "law and miscellaneous library, for the use of the Legislature and Supreme Court of this State." During the time between these two acts, the Library of Congress was destroyed and rebuilt and Illinois was settled, became a state, had four different state houses and began a wide range of internal improvement projects. Even after Illinois obtained statehood in 1818, the official creation of the Illinois State Library had to await 20 years of attempts to identify and fill the new state government's reference needs. Less that three months after declaring statehood, on March 2, 1819, while the state capital was still Kaskaskia, the General Assembly authorized the governor to exchange laws with the other states, which was the common practice at the time. During the following year, Vandalia became Illinois' second capital. Secretary of State Elias Kent Kane had the few books and records in his office loaded on a small ox-cart and moved through 100 miles of wilderness to the new capital. There, on Saturday, Feb. 3, 1821, Representative William Otwell from Edwardsville introduced a bill to the 2nd General Assembly "authorizing the purchase for the use of the state... [of] a library to consist of such books and maps as shall be designed by a committee of General Assembly." The bill was tabled a few days later and never acted upon.
