Lau tries to make his effort more gritty and realistic, much the same way Ringo Lam did with the On Fire movies during the heyday of the "heroic bloodshed" pictures of the 1980's. But Kenneth Lau is really no Ringo Lam, and we're just left with your standard Hong Kong gangster drama, which, as you might guess, has really nothing to do with the Edward Norton movie American History X In the film, To Tai-Wai plays Bee, a young man living under the shadow of his brother Fifteen (Anthony Wong), a popular and powerful local Triad. After Fifteen is sent to prison, Bee decides to join up with Fire (Wayne Lai), to help support his ailing mother (Helena Law Lan) and impress Fifteen's girlfriend, Sandy (Yoyo Mung). Bee quickly becomes one of the biggest Triads in the area, which becomes a real problem after Fifteen is released from prison and Fire wants him permanently taken out of the picture.

Although there is evidence of human settlements going back thousands of years, the modern history of Hong Kong did not start until 1842 when China lost the opium wars to the British and subsequently Hong Kong became a British colony. At the time the island was very basic and mainly a fishing port. During the following decades, Hong Kong flourished with trade expanding at a rapid rate and business sectors such as banking and insurance began to thrive. As the island lacked resources such as water and farmland, the British pushed for more land from China in 1898 and succeeded in obtaining new areas which are now know as the New Territories. In the early part of the 20th century, Hong Kong managed to escape much of the effects of World War 1 during the period 1914 to 1918. Its` population in the first half of the 20th century expanded rapidly from half a million people at the beginning to over 1.5 million by the 1940s. With the arrival of World War II and the Japanese invasion of China, Hong Kong took in a huge number of refugees from the Chinese mainland as people fled to escape the Japanese onslaught.

Two Neolithic cultures have been found with fine pottery and carvings that date to about 4,000 BC. During the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC) and Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), people from the mainland came and settled in Hong Kong, and coins of the Han Dynasty have been found in Hong Hong. This area was an important trading and strategic region for Chinese mainland during the Tan and Song dynasties (618 to 1279). After this period, the importance of Hong Kong faded, and did not start attracting attention until the 19th century. The first westerner to visit Hong Kong was Jorge Alvares, a Portuguese mariner, and he began trading with the Chinese. Tea, silk and other Asian luxury goods were introduced to europe by the Portuguese. During the 15th and 16th century is when western influence came about in Hong Kong due to the increased trade of Chinese products such as tea and silk.

When the First Opium War was ended in the following year, the island was formally ceded from China under the Treaty of Nanking, which was signed on August 29, and then the British established a Crown Colony with the founding of Victoria City. In 1860, after China's humiliate defeat in the Second Opium War, the Kowloon Peninsula that located at south of Boundary Street and Stonecutter's Island were ceded to Britain permanently under the Convention of Peking. In 1898, Britain obtained a 99-year "lease" of the adjacent northern lands and Lantau Island with outlying islands, where became known as the New Territories.
