Extractions: The Battle for Flanders Flanders had grown to be the industrial center of northern Europe and had become extremely wealthy through its cloth manufacture. It could not produce enough wool to satisfy its market and imported fine fleece from England. England depended upon this trade for its foreign exchange. During the 1200's, the upper-class English had adopted Norman fashions and switched from beer to wine. Note that beer and wine were very important elements in the medieval diet. Both contain vitamin and yeast complexes that the medieval diet, especially during the winter, did not provide. Besides, the preservation of food was a difficult matter in that era, and the alcohol in beer and wine represented a large number of calories stored in an inexpensive and effective fashion. People did get drunk during the middle ages, but most could not afford to do so. Beer and wine were valued as food sources and were priced accordingly The problem was that England could not grow grapes to produce the wine that many of the English now favored and had to import it. A triangular trade arose in which English fleece was exchanged for Flemish cloth, which was then taken to southern France and exchanged for wine, which was then shipped into England and Ireland, primarily through the ports of Dublin, Bristol, and London.

In 1338 Admiral Nicholas Béhuchet, whose background is thought to have been in the law rather than as a seafarer, set sail for the Channel Islands with a large fleet. He landed troops in Jersey, and, after the usual round of burning and looting, they settled down to besiege Gorey Castle. That they meant to conquer the Island is evidenced by the length of their stay. The troops and the Admiral remained before the castle walls for at least six months. During the course of the siege the Seigneur of Rosel, Jean de Barentin, was killed while leading a sortie against the French forces. However, in spite of the length of the siege, the castle resisted, and Béhuchet withdrew, going on to see if he could do better in Guernsey.

Volume: 59 Issue 10 Printer-friendly version By challenging the very idea of a continuous Anglo-French medieval war Ian Mortimer reveals the remarkable complexities of a series of distinct conflicts that began with a prophecy and ended with an English dynasty seeking the approval of God. Everyone knows that the Hundred Years War was a protracted series of conflicts between England and France that took place in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was characterised by the claim of the kings of England also to be kings of France by right of inheritance through Isabella of France (c. 1296-1358), mother of Edward III (r. 1327-77) and the last surviving child of Philip the Fair (r. 1285-1314). But while such a description might suffice for an encyclopaedia, it is laden with problems. What did the protagonists seek? Who were the combatants? What did they have in common and what divided them? What gave the war as a whole its integrity? Is the idea of a single ‘war’ anything more than a historiographical myth? The problems start to emerge when considering the possible dates for the start and end of the ‘war’. Some authors confidently assert that it began with the first battle at Cadsand in November 1337, when English forces attacked an undefended Flemish community near Sluys. Others, characterising the war as a struggle over control of the Duchy of Aquitaine, point to the French confiscation of the duchy earlier that same year. Others still, seeing the war’s principle motivation as the English claim to the throne of France, state that it began when Edward III assumed the French title in 1340. But, if the war is really to be characterised by Edward’s claim to the French throne, his first moves in this direction were made as early as 1328 on the death of his uncle, Charles the Fair. And as for disputes over Aquitaine, these began even earlier, in the two previous reigns.

Morillo's title is a little misleading: he is as much concerned with the organisation for war under William the Conqueror, William Rufus and Henry I as with their actual warfare. A monarch's ability to wage war depended crucially on this organisation and Morillo to firmly reiterates the leading work carried out in this field by Prestwich; he therefore places the function of the familia regis, the king's military household, at the heart of the Anglo-Norman military machine. Ties of loyalty, finance and self-interest ensured that this force composed the elite corps of the army and played the leading role in military operations.
