Extractions: Petition to Parliament 9 December 2008 The first signatures on the national petition calling on the government to support the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will be presented to parliament at 1pm on Human Rights Day - Wednesday, 10 December. Human Rights Day this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global statement expressing the inherent dignity and equality of all human beings. The theme of the year-long UN celebrations to mark the anniversary is 'Dignity and justice for all of us'. "Unfortunately the New Zealand government appears to have little commitment to dignity and justice for all, as it remains one of only three governments around the world opposed to the most recent international human rights Declaration - the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples", Edwina Hughes, Peace Movement Aotearoa Coordinator, said today. "This places NZ in a tiny minority of states that are ignoring their obligations under international law, and it makes a mockery of the government's claims to be a principled defender of human rights and a credible candidate for the UN Human Rights Council."

Extractions: Communities We're sorry the story you requested is no longer available SUNDAY Nov 14, 2010 18:30 ET By MIKE SILVERMAN, Associated Press One is about a fictional opera singer who possesses the secret of eternal youth. The other stars a real-life tenor who merely seems to. Both examples of improbable longevity were on display at the San Francisco Opera this weekend. On Friday night, Placido Domingo a few months shy of 70 gave his final performance in the title role of Franco Alfano's "Cyrano de Bergerac." One night later, Karita Mattila sang the second of six performances of Leos Janacek's "The Makropulos Case," about a mysterious diva who has lived more than 300 years. "Cyrano," adapted from the play by Edmond Rostand, tells of a poet with a grotesque nose who is secretly in love with the fair Roxanne but uses his gifts to help the handsome Christian win her heart. Christian is killed in battle, and only years later, when Cyrano himself is mortally wounded, does he reveal his feelings. Alfano, best-known for writing the ending to "Turandot" after Puccini's death, completed "Cyrano" in 1936, but it has never won a place in the mainstream repertory. Still, it has two moving scenes the one in which the hero helps Christian woo Roxanne, and the final scene in which he reads her Christian's last love letter and she finally understands he is the real author.

Extractions: The deforestation of rainforests has long been an issue that concerns all parts of the world. The reprecussions of the deforestation have led to the destruction of environment, the endangerment of species, and the inhumane treatment of fellow communities. While the effects are worldwide, you will find in the following research that the responsibility for battling this problem is worldwide as well. Because the issue of deforestation involves our relations with nature and with each other and will ultimately affect the survival of both, we consider it a global issue that needs tending to today. A fellow member of Congress screamed “baby killer” as you were speaking on the floor of the House. You have received death threats. I heard on television some of the phone calls you received and they were truly sickening. I understand why your wife has been so tormented by these threatening phone calls, that she has taken the phone off the hook. in the wake of the health reform vote. Eight members of this community have been assassinated In the wake of the threats that you have received, you have spoken out forcefully against this kind of unacceptable behavior. I truly sympathize with you when you say those threats had made your life a "living hell."

Eliot, a son of St. Louis, once posed the question "At what point does the Mississippi River become what the Mississippi River means?" His question, coming as part of the Introduction to a 1944 edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , resonates many ways. But one of the most important points Eliot raises is that the Mississippi does mean something. But what does it mean? Or, to put the question the way it would be raised in a graduate seminar: How is the meaning of e the Mississippi River created, through which texts and contexts, and by which agencies, (that is "agency" in the terms of an "agent" of change, not a bureaucracy). Who speaks? Who listens? Who is heard? Who is unheard? Thankfullyfor you readers more so than for me as the writer of these musingsthis is not a graduate seminar. But the point remains: what does the Mississippi River mean, and how is that meaning carried forth?

Extractions: T he planet's roughly 350 million indigenous peoples took notable steps on the international stage in the last decade. They got the world's governments to agree to create a body to represent them at the United Nations, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and to appoint a special rapporteur responsible for their human rights. In 2007 a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was approved by the UN. Yet the living conditions of most "tribal", "aboriginal", "native" or "first" peoples remain precarious. IPS, with its network of contributors at the UN and linked to indigenous communities worldwide, is committed to tracking the world community's efforts to do justice to the rights and aspirations of these peoples, with a special current focus on Latin America's 40 million rural indigenous peoples.
