About Us You are here: www.gov.im Manx National Heritage Collections Archaeology Archaeology is the study of the physical remains of past societies. Archaeologists investigate historic sites and landscapes in search of objects, building remains and environmental information to build up a picture of daily life in the past. But above all, archaeology is about people. People have lived in the Isle of Man for at least 8,500 years and archaeology is the only source of evidence for most of that time. Shapes and patterns of the landscape reflect this long history but the remains of everyday objects can help to fully reconstruct the Island’s past, with the more unusual artefacts giving a further insight into our ancestors’ lives. The contents of the archaeological collections of Manx National Heritage represent the ingenuity, adaptability, independence and efficiency of all those who have settled on the Isle of Man from the Mesolithic period up to the 16th century. These periods conform with Manx historical events rather than eras more recognisable in an English context - there is no Roman period as the Isle of Man was never directly under Roman rule, no Anglo-Saxon occupation and no Norman Conquest. The rule of the Stanley and Atholl Lords of Man is more relevant to the Island than the standard conventions of ‘Medieval’ and ‘Post Medieval’.

About Us You are here: www.gov.im Manx National Heritage Story of Mann Story of Mann Introduction Early Christianity in Mann Hillforts Round Houses ... Manx Crosses Two races - the Celts and the Vikings - have been the defining elements in the forging of the Manx identity. The well-preserved historical landscape of the Isle of Man still contains many of their relics, and provides a constant reminder of the antecedents of our national character. The earliest inhabitants of the Isle of Man we can really claim to know lived some 1,500 years ago. A race of Christian Celts, they spoke a language we can recognise, built homes and defences, and raised crosses in memory of their dead. But these Celts had a much older heritage, going back perhaps another 1,000 years. We know of it only what we can discover from artefacts they left behind, and the places where they lived, worked and died. Around the time of Christ, Roman invaders occupied much of Britain. But they largely ignored the Isle of Man; archaeology has revealed few signs of Roman influence here, and nothing to suggest permanent occupation. Left undisturbed, the Manx Celts traded and absorbed the ideas, material culture and religion of their neighbours.
