Kenya is regarded by many archaeologists to be the "cradle of humankind." This is thanks to discoveries by Louis and Mary Leakey of over 4 million year old human remains in Nariokotome near Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya and Tugen Hills in the Rift Valley. The Ogiek, hunter-gatherer community which has occupied the Mau Forest for over 5 millennia, are considered by anthropologists to be the aboriginal inhabitants of Kenya. Cushitic-speaking people from northern Africa migrated into Kenya about 4 millennia ago while Nilotic and Bantu peoples - who now account for three-quarters of the country's population - migrated to Kenya from West Africa and the Nile Valley. Arab traders began arriving at the Kenyan coast around the 1st century AD and colonized the coast. Then when the Portuguese arrived in the sixteenth century, control over the Kenyan coast see-sawed between them and the resilient Omani Arabs.

Arab traders began frequenting the Kenya coast around the first century AD. Kenya's proximity to the Arabian Peninsula invited colonization, and Arab and Persian settlements sprouted along the coast by the eighth century. During the first millennium AD, Nilotic and Bantu peoples moved into the region, and the latter now comprise two thirds of Kenya's population. The Swahili language, a Bantu language with significant Arabic vocabulary, developed as a trade language for the region. Arab dominance on the coast was interrupted for about 150 years following the arrival of the Portuguese in 1498. British exploration of East Africa in the mid-1800s eventually led to the establishment of Britain's East African Protectorate in 1895. The Protectorate promoted settlement of the fertile central highlands by Europeans, dispossessing the Kikuyu and others of their land. Some fertile and well watered parts of the Rift Valley inhabited by the Maasai and the western highlands inhabited by the Kalenjin were also handed over to European settlers. For other Kenyan communities, the British presence was slight, especially in the arid northern half of the country. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before Kenya was officially made a British colony in 1920, but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944 when a few appointed (but not elected) African representatives were permitted to sit in the legislature.

Dr Leakey found a skull near Lake Turkana that is dated 2.5 million years old. The initial tribal groups developed their own religions, traditions, and ruling systems. The Cushtic tribes came from Ethiopia; the Niltic tribes from the Nile valley and the third group the Bantu were agriculturists and now the largest group of tribes. Islam arrived along the coast in the 9th Century and over the next 5 centuries a large trading network developed along the coastal areas. The Portuguese captured Mombassa in 1505 and in 1593 constructed Fort Jesus in Mombassa which is open to visitors. The Portuguese left in 1720 following battles with the Omanis. The period of liberation started in 1948 with the Mau Mau freedom fight. Kenya gained independence on 12 December 1963. Jomo Kenyatta, the first president used the slogan "Harambee" to motivate the process of national development. Jomo Kenyatta died in 1978 and was followed by Daniel Arap Moi who remained President for 24 years. In 2002 Moi resigned and Kibaki became President under the National Rainbow Coalition. Elections are due in 2007.

An amazing discovery made by Kenyan anthropologist Richard Leakey at Koobi Fora along the shore of Lake Rudolf in Kenya confirmed that belief. Leakey and his fellow workers uncovered some 400 hominid remains, representing perhaps 230 individuals, making Koobi Fora the site of the richest and most varied collection of early human remains found in the world. Here, apparently, was the cradle of man-the-toolmaker; deliberately shaped flints found beside the lake have been dated as 2.5 millions years old. In 1972 a dramatic new discovery was made on the eastern shore of the lake: the skull and leg bones of one of the creatures who made the tools, and probably man's earliest known ancestor. Known as "1470 Man" (as he was coded by the anthropologists as "Skull 1470"), he was a hunter. He used a simple pebble-toola small natural stone from which flakes were chipped to leave a sharp cutting edge. The remains found at Lake Rudolf indicate that "1470 Man" could stand and walk upright, and is believed to be the direct ancestor of modern man.

The KPU was banned and its leader detained after political unrest related to Kenyatta's visit to Nyanza Province. No new opposition parties were formed after 1969, and KANU became the sole political party. At Kenyatta's death in August 1978, Vice President Daniel arap Moi became interim President. On October 14, Moi became President formally after he was elected head of KANU and designated its sole nominee. Moi was reelected for another 5-year term. Opposition parties won about 45% of the parliamentary seats, but Moi's KANU Party retained a majority of the legislature. Parliamentary reforms in November 1997 expanded political rights in Kenya, and the number of political parties grew rapidly. Moi won re-election as President in the December 1997 elections, and his KANU Party narrowly retained its parliamentary majority, with 109 out of 122 seats.In December 2002, the people of Kenya elected Mwai Kibaki as the nation�s third president. President Kibaki received 62 % of the vote, and his 15-party group, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), also won 59 % of the parliamentary seats.

This process of migration occurred through small population movements and interactions and stretched over a period of centuries. From this process emerged the various social formations that existed in Kenya at the beginning of colonial rule in the late 19th century ad. These groupings were fluid, representing a process of ongoing social change. For example, in the 17th century the ancestors of the Bantu-speaking Kikuyu settled in the forested hills and ridges south and west of Mount Kenya; as they did so, they borrowed customs from some peoples, absorbed other peoples, and competed with various groups for resources. Most of Kenya�s peoples combined livestock raising with agriculture, although some, like the Nilotic-speaking Masai, were nomadic herders. This led to the declaration of emergency in 1952 and the arrest of several leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta, who was later to become Kenya’s first President. Jomo Kenyatta was released from detention in 1961 and he joined the Kenya African National Union (KANU) in August, that year. In February 1962, the second Lancaster House constitutional conference was held and chaired by Secretary of State for Colonies, Reginald Maulding. The conference created the Upper House or Senate to safeguard white settler interests and granting of independence modalities. The 41 Member Senate with limited powers occupied what is today the County Hall. The Lower House represented the people’s voices. A general election was held between May 18 and May 25, 1963. KANU led by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta won against Ronald Ngala’s KADU and the African People’s Party led by Paul Ngei. On June 1, 1963 internal self-government was granted and the day came to be known as Madaraka day. On December 12, 1963, Kenya attained independence (Uhuru) with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta as the first Prime Minister. The day was named Uhuru Day.
