These clashes also brought the native martial arts of Japan and China into Korea, further developing modern tae kwond o. This permanently altered the native arts practiced among Korean families. Martial arts knowledge of tae kwon do were handed down from generation to generation. In 1909, the Japanese invaded and annexed Korea. This colonization proved oppressive to the Korean people. Japanese imperialists declared the practice of native Korean martial arts to be forbidden. Eventually, censorship of all Korean history and culture was forced and Japanese was declared the only language acceptable in schools and in print. It was this attempt at brutal subjugation of native culture that caused resurgence of all Korean culture in secret, including martial arts. Underground societies practiced all facets of Korean culture in secrecy to keep it alive. In addition, many Koreans went to Japan and China to live and work, absorbing new culture and new styles of martial arts. World War II ended in 1945, bringing the end of Japanese occupation.

As the amount of material grew, I turned more toward Korea's past to better understand the roots of the war. The work quickly evolved into a major effort to tell the amazing story of Korea, one of the few places on earth with a history tightly interwoven with that of its neighbors. The result was a massive 1400 page manuscript entitled, Korea in the Eye of the Tiger , which became the heart of the Korean History Project. After a frustrating pursuit through the normal channels for publication, I decided to look to the Internet, which has made it possible to bring this compelling story to far more people in a world-wide audience than would ever be possible through traditional book publishing. In the summer of 1996, work began in earnest to transform the manuscript into a dynamic, living story enriched with maps, illustrations and interactive features. Words long frozen on paper began coming to life in a dynamic, interactive format. I believe the choice was a good one, since it has given me the creative freedom and control needed to continually expand and update this "electronic history book." In 1948, the democratic South Korea and Communist North Korea were divided at the 38th parallel. In the Korean war of 1950-1953, North Korea invaded South Korea. Throughout the ancient history of Korea, Koreans were constantly subjected to defending themselves from outside invaders instead of venturing out to conquer new territories. South Korea was able to flourish as a democratic economy after the end of the Korean War. Because of it's history, South Koreans have a fierce sense of national pride and are often distrustful of other foreign cultures. South Korea's societal order, education system and the way of conducting business are all based on Confucian principles. In this modern era, South Koreans are starting to do away with the stubborn old-school ways of dating and marriage customs. In recent years, South Korea has been highly influenced by foreign cultures eg United States, Japan. Many Koreans enjoyed the freedom and openess of western cultures.

They are: Three kingdoms: 57 B.C. to 668 A.D. Republic of Korea: 1945 onwards The South Korea history history of South Korea was yet to witness another attack. This time by the North Korean Communist forces who launched a massive surprise attack on the 25th of June, 1950. On June 27th, the then President of the United States, Harry S. Truman ordered US armed intervention on Seoul and invoked military sanctions against North Korea. The US and South Korean troops fought a heroic battle holding the North Korean troops off. But, by the first week of August they were forced to retreat to a 4000 square mile beachhead in southeast Korea. Here, they successfully repulsed a superior North Korean force until September 15, when a major UN amphibious assault was launched. And by the 30th of September, the UN forces had gained complete control of South Korea.
