By "putting ourselves in someone else's shoes," we can gain understanding and compassion. This activity requires students to pretend that they are ants. They crawl or kneel in a grassy area, and describe the way things would look if they were suddenly changed into ants. Then, they use their creativity and imagination to write stories or draw pictures describing their experiences as ants. This can be used as an introduction to discussion about how animals are affected by changes that humans make on their environment. Your students should have a different view of life after their experience. Materials Procedure 1. Explain that all animals have complex lives. For example, what would it be like to be an ant for a day? To ants, a human being must appear as a giant. A crumb of food would be a feast to bring back to the ant hill. So that they may experience this, tell your students they have suddenly been transformed into ants tiny black insects that live outdoors. They can bring a magnifying glass. They should also bring paper and pencil to record their experiences and share them with others. Hand them their clipboards, pencils and magnifying glass, and take them to a grassy place outdoors.
