Extractions: Translated into Klingon by Nick Nicholas and Andrew Strader The study of artificial language is not an easy one. The aims of their authors are various, sometimes admittedly inane. Most artificial systems, once generated, are never used or revealed to anyone but the creator, and even then can hardly be called languages. The distinguishing characteristics of genuine artificial languages, codes and functional systems are hazy, and identifying them is often viewed as missing the point. An important thing to keep in mind, however, is that although artificial languages are artificial, they do exist. To assume that an artificial language is illegitimate because a single individual or select group developed it is not only simplifying the issue but also writing off any linguistic relevance it may have. Thousands of speakers of various artificial languages would tend to disagree with that assessment.

Do not confuse artificial languages (henceforth ALs, also called 'conlangs') with computer programming languages. Although my approach to language design is formal, the languages that I discuss are intended to be used by people to communicate with each other. In some of the essays, I also discuss how to design these languages so that they are 'computer-tractable'; that is, languages that can be used by people, but which can also be used to communicate easily and accurately with computers.

Language games are used primarily by groups attempting to conceal their conversations from others. Some common examples are Pig Latin , which is used all over the globe; the Gibberish family, prevalent in the United States and Sweden ; and Verlan , spoken in France Each of these language games involves a usually simple standard transformation to speech, thus encoding it. The languages can be easily mentally encoded and decoded by a skilled speaker at the rate of normal speech, while those who either don't know the key or aren't practiced in rapid speech are left hearing nothing but gibberish A common difficulty with language games is that they are usually passed down orally. While written translations can be made, they are often imperfect, and thus spelling can vary widely. Some factions argue that words in these spoken tongues should simply be written the way they are pronounced, while others insist that the purity of language demands that the transformation remain visible when the words are imparted to paper. THE ESTONIAN LANGUAGE The ancestors of the Estonians arrived at the Baltic Sea 13 000 years ago when the mainland glaciers of the last Ice Age had retreated from the area now designated as Estonia. The first settlers who followed the reindeer herds came here from south, from Central Europe. Although the vocabulary and grammar of the language used by people in those days have changed beyond recognition, the mentality of the tundra hunters of thousands of years ago can be still perceived in modern Estonian. Language and lingering mentality Even the most ordinary everyday Estonian language contains numerous ancient expressions, possibly going back as far as the Ice Age. The Estonians say ('in the hand of the cold, rain, sun, wind'), or (literally 'he was bitten from the hand of dogs' i. e. 'he was bitten by dogs') or (literally 'he was stung from the hand of nettles'). Quite obviously, nobody any longer thinks that the wind, rain, dogs or nettles actually have hands. But in ancient times the moving, often personified natural phenomena, to say nothing about animals and plants, were believed to have certain powers. These powers, sometimes exerting control over human beings, were symbolised by a hand. Hence the contemporary Estonian
