   Extractions: As a supplement to my page on European comics , here's a sampling of Latin American comics (both Spanish and Portuguese). Where do you find these? Well, Mafalda can be found or ordered in any Spanish-language bookstore. For just about everything else... good luck, you'll need it. I got most of these in Latin America. Suggestions are welcome. When I get another shot at a scanner I'll put up some more sample panels. Also, I've only browsed some of these; I'll fill in fuller reports as I get through them. The four best of these, in my opinion: Mafalda Fontannarosa Ed Mort , and Vasques's Sottovoce Mark Rosenfelder Caloi Clemente Clemente is a striped bird-thing, who has apparently stood around for twenty years and made snide comments on the state of Argentina. It's mostly for insiders, I think... e.g., 42 strips in a row decrying foreign words in Spanish gets to be a bit much.    Extractions: Latin American theatre has been characterized and identified for decades, rightly or wrongly, from an almost exclusively socio-political point of view; it has been measured and evaluated as to its ideological message, as to whether or not is 'compromised', this still being the case up until the present day. The reasons for this situation are of varying origin. On the one hand, it springs from the theatre itself, or rather, from one given conception of theatre. It seems that theatre has been conditioned by its medium of expression to a degree unparalleled in either poetry or the novel, at least not to the same degree and duration. What Fernando de Toro (up until recently, a voice crying in the wilderness) has been repeating for the last decade, has to do with the lack of mediatization, the lack of artistic structure, in Latin American dramatic production in general. He has been calling for a mediatization that would return the theatre to the theatre, and lift it out of what has been its role in many cases, a vehicle for ideologies - however legitimate or illegitimate, however necessary or unnecessary - ideologies determined by whatever given, inevitable historical circumstances of the day. His view is one that is beginning to gain momentum. What we see as 'new' in the theatre is a growing awareness among theatre-people of their role as artisans of dramatic production, as architects of signs, as visualizers of gesture, and not just as producers of text to be spoken out loud, or as was often the case, declaimed.

Panamanian businesses serve seviche with buttered saltine crackers or in dainty pastry shells. It is also served in a large crystal bowl with the guests helping themselves, either by spearing it with toothpicks or filling the pastry shells. In Mexico, seviche is accompanied by slices of raw onions and served on toasted tortillas.
