Extractions: In the course of the l9th century, English was established as an independent field of study in the University of Copenhagen. In l883 a fairly specific curriculum was introduced , and from the beginning the history of the English language as well as the reading of Old English and Middle English texts were obligatory disciplines and formed a substantial part of the curriculum as in most other European universities. Historical linguistics and the reading of medieval texts were both abandoned as obligatory disciplines in 1976. Among the most important reasons were The growth in other linguistic fields The unrelenting nature of the work required in the historical disciplines The succinct (or even turgid) style of the textbooks The narrow scope of historical linguistics as it was taught then External reasons Since 1976 very few people have graduated from my department who were knowledgeable about, let alone specialists in historical linguistics. A vast scholarly field (and one in which several Danish scholars have excelled) is dying out in Copenhagen University, and the end, the retirement of the last historical linguist, is now in sight. This brief historical outline will have a familiar ring to many people in other universities, and a considerable number of us feel that the present situation is intolerable. We must make a new attempt at teaching historical linguistics, simply because we are the last generation who will have the chance.

The use of language is one of the defining characteristics of human beings, and it is the basic element for the process of communication that holds society together. Linguistics is a field that relates to many other human activities that are heavily dependent on language. One of the best ways to find out about Linguistics is to look at some of the questions that linguists are exploring. How are languages put together? How do they work? How are they alike and how are they different? Which language systems and structures are found in all languages and which are specific to just some? How do children learn their first language? How do we learn other languages? Can we teach or program computers to understand language? Are these machine languages the same or different from human language? MOL - Association For Mathematics Of Language
A subgroup of the Association of Computational linguistics (ACL) which concentrates on the formal side of computational linguistics based on logic, continuous and discrete maths, and also statistics. Its biannual meetings (called MOL) usually focus on formal grammar, formal properties of languages, and model-theoretic and proof-theoretic methods in linguistics.

It generally connotes work that is more theoretical than much of what constitutes computational linguistics, but it includes work at every level of linguistic structure. MOL is the ACL special interest group dedicated to the study of Mathematical Linguistics, although the organization actually predates its incorporation into ACL.
