Extractions: Magnetic Field of the Earth The Earth's magnetic field is similar to that of a bar magnet tilted 11 degrees from the spin axis of the Earth. The problem with that picture is that the Curie temperature of iron is about 770 C . The Earth's core is hotter than that and therefore not magnetic. So how did the Earth get its magnetic field? Magnetic fields surround electric currents , so we surmise that circulating electic currents in the Earth's molten metalic core are the origin of the magnetic field. A current loop gives a field similar to that of the earth. The magnetic field magnitude measured at the surface of the Earth is about half a Gauss and dips toward the Earth in the northern hemisphere. The magnitude varies over the surface of the Earth in the range 0.3 to 0.6 Gauss. The Earth's magnetic field is attributed to a dynamo effect of circulating electric current, but it is not constant in direction. Rock specimens of different age in similar locations have different directions of permanent magnetization. Evidence for 171 magnetic field reversals during the past 71 million years has been reported. Although the details of the dynamo effect are not known in detail, the rotation of the Earth plays a part in generating the currents which are presumed to be the source of the magnetic field.

The magnetic field of the Sun can be probed in a rather precise and direct manner because in the presence of a magnetic field the energy levels of atoms (and ions and molecules) are split into more than one level. This causes spectral transition lines to also be split into more than one line, with the amount of splitting proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. This is called the Zeeman Effect , and the corresponding increase in the number of spectral lines is called Zeeman splitting. Thus, we can infer the presence of magnetic fields if we observe Zeeman splitting in the spectrum, and we can measure the strength of the field by measuring quantitatively the amount of Zeeman splitting. Measurement of the light from sunspots (obtained by masking off the light from parts of the Sun not in the sunspot) indicate significant Zeeman splitting of the spectral lines. Thus, sunspots are associated with strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, it is observed that When sunspots come in pairs, one tends to have a magnetic field polarity that is opposite that of the other (that is, one behaves magnetically like the north pole of a bar magnet and the other behaves magnetically like the south pole of a bar magnet).

The cancers , a form of leukemia called acute lymphoblastic leukemia ALL ), had long been associated with exposure to ionizing radiation. But power lines do not generate ionizing radiation. What they do generate is a weak magnetic field that oscillates at the frequency of the alternating current (60 hertz in the U.S.; 50 hertz in Europe). Follow-up studies elsewhere continued to find a weak association between living near power lines and the incidence of ALL in children. Note that the association was with the proximity to power lines; not to the strength of the magnetic fields. The nature of the wiring (e.g., voltage, proximity) was used as a surrogate to the actual agent under suspicion (the magnetic field).

However, most fusion confinement concepts are unsuited for space power production due to their large size and complexity, and are non-ideal for propulsion due to the use of D-T fuel which releases most of its energy in the form of high energy neutrons. A notable exception to these restraints is provided by the Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) which is a simple elongated current ring confined in a modest field solenoidal magnet, as sketched in the Figure. FRCs lack any significant toroidal field, which results in a compact high b plasma that is suitable for burning advanced aneutronic fuels. (Synchrotron radiation would limit ignition of high temperature aneutronic fuels in the low b FRTP startup technology is well developed, but is too bulky and heavy for space applications. In recognition of this, NASA is supporting a very high power, but short duration, RMF startup experiment called STX (Star Thrust Experiment). STX will study the RMF formation and sustainment of hot (100s eV) mid-sized FRCs, where the classical skin depth of the RMF is much less then the radius of the FRC. Penetration of the RMF has been demonstrated under such circumstances due to the collisionless Hall effect. In the laboratory frame of reference, the RMF works by pulling the electrons around azimuthally while leaving the ions behind, whereas in the electron frame, the RMF appears at rest due to synchronous rotation. This is accomplished by selecting the RMF frequency and amplitude such that the electrons are magnetized with respect to the rotating field (

The planets differ greatly in size and properties, and their fields differ too. Yet they all seem to have dynamo fields, or (in the case of Mars and the Moon) have had them in the past. Jupiter (bigger version) In early 1955, two young radio-astronomers started working with a cross-shaped antenna array of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM). The array stood on the north shore of the Potomac River (upstream from Washington, DC and slightly south of White's Ferry; more here ) and could select signals from a narrow range of directions. Ken Franklin and Bernie Burke calibrated it using a known source, the Crab Nebula , then began surveying the surrounding sky. They detected another conspicuous radio source, but unlike the Crab, its position slowly shifted. What was it? Standing next to the array at night, Bernie noted a star overhead and asked Ken "what is that bright thing up there?" It was Jupiter, and that's where the signal came from. In publishing their result, the astronomers speculated "the cause of this radiation is not known but is likely to be due to electrical disturbances in Jupiter's atmosphere." The discovery is now commemorated by a historical marker at the site (image on the left).
