Extractions: As a child, I discovered I could levitate a ping pong ball on a stream of air from the output pipe of a vacuum cleaner. This is similar to optical levitation of a glass bead in a laser beam (pressure from photon recoil instead of an air stream). It has been calculated that every second, the Earth is struck by about 4.5 pounds of light. I hope you enjoy the many exciting ways to levitate objects.

General Particle Tracer 3D particle tracer designed to simulate the movement of charged particles in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. The code is widely used for accelerator, beamline and FEL design. http://www.pulsar.nl/gpt
Extractions: Introduction: Over the past years the General Particle Tracer (GPT) package has become a well established simulation tool for the design of accelerators and beam lines. GPT is based on full 3D particle tracking techniques, providing a solid basis for the study of all 3D and non-linear effects of charged particles dynamics in electromagnetic fields. All built-in beam line components and external 2D/3D field-maps can be arbitrarily positioned and oriented to simulate a complicated setup-up and study the effects of misalignments. An embedded fifth order Runge-Kutta driver with adaptive stepsize control ensures accuracy while computation time is kept to a minimum. GPT provides various 2D and 3D space-charge models, including a sophisticated 3D particle-mesh method that scales O( N ) in terms of CPU time. Because of its modern implementation, GPT can be easily extended by the user to perform highly specialized calculations for specific applications. Hierarchical data analysis, automatic parameter scans and graphical output allow for fast and detailed interpretation of the simulation results. New features of GPT version 2.8 compared to version 2.7 include:
Extractions: ORIGIN OF TERRESTRIAL MAGNETIC FIELD Abstract The objective of the article is to show the entire amount of geomagnetic field arises from rotating thermoelectric charges caused by thermal gradient of Earth's crust and core. Although there is almost same amount of positively and negatively charged volumes of Earth's globe, they are split and therefore their velocities are not equal, and this particular inequality creates terrestrial magnetic field. Other The Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO) began daily observations of the Sun's global magnetic field in May 1975, with the goal of understanding changes in the Sun and how those changes affect the Earth ; this is now called space weather . Since 1976 low-resolution maps are also made of the Sun's magnetic field each day, as are observations of solar surface motions. The observatory is located in the foothills just west of the Stanford University campus. Current research topics include space weather helioseismology , and the solar cycle ; The staff are closely associated with the Solar Oscillations Investigation that uses the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) instrument on the SOHO spacecraft to observe the inside of the Sun Information is available concerning Solar Observatories Group Astronomy , and Astrophysics at Stanford, the SOI-MDI project, and schedules for various local seminars Stanford University operates WSO with all funding currently provided by NASA. Traditionally WSO was supported by the ONR NASA , and the NSF . The observatory is directed by Prof. P.H. Scherrer. Pictures of WSO, staff members and other local wildlife.

Contact LRA ABOUT US... Linear Research Associates formed in 1974 to design and fabricate electronic instrumentation systems for research groups at Cornell University. Since that beginning, the scope of Linear's work has grown to encompass a wide range of applied research and development projects in physics and electrical engineering. One such project, commissioned in 1991, was a request for study and recommendation of a possible solution to an EM site magnetic field problem. In response to this request, Linear Research Associates developed and installed a prototype wideband active-feedback system which reduced interfering magnetic fields by a factor of approximately 20. Not long after installation of the prototype, Linear received third-party inquiries about the system and, eventually, purchase orders for additional prototype systems. In mid-1992, Linear finalized an improved commercial design of the active-feedback system, filed for patent protection and initiated production of its current EMFC-series active magnetic field compensation product line. A series of significant performance upgrades have been implemented since that time, including the introduction of an extended range ("QDC") version for compensating slowly-varying magnetic fields due to movement of elevators, trucks, subway trains, etc.
Magnet Shielding Explains why some people over react about stray magnetic fields. http://www.acornnmr.com/appnotes/shielding.htm
Extractions: NMR Magnet Shielding The seat of the pants guide to understanding the problems of shielding NMR magnets One of the problems associated with working with NMR instruments is the stray magnet field surrounding the magnet. This stray magnetic field has grown to be a larger problem as the magnets had moved to higher fields and wider bores. The problems with stray magnet fields are multiple and include: It should be noted that if the NMR magnet can affect objects at these distances, then movement of magnetic objects at these distances can affect the NMR magnet. This can cause field shifts larger than the NMR system's lock can correct and/or the loss of magnet homogeneity. The problems these stray magnetic fields can cause are often made worse by the reactions of the people working in these stray fields. To my knowledge, no scientific studies have shown any harm to biological objects caused by static stray magnetic fields, even very strong fields like inside an MRI unit. However, the emotional reaction of many people to finding out they are in a stray magnetic field can be "non-linear". Often these are the same people strapping magnets on their own or their horse's body (
Silencing The Fields - EMF Reduction Principles A practical guide to reduction of AC magnetic fields, by Ed Leeper. Includes commentary on EMF health effects studies. http://silencingthefields.com/
Extractions: Concern has arisen about the health effects of AC magnetic fields, also called electromagnetic fields or EMF, because of scientific studies that have linked a modestly increased risk of childhood cancer with elevated field levels of this type. These fields result from our use of AC electric power. But high magnetic fields can be avoided without abandoning electric power. The fields that arise are often caused by household wiring errors that can be corrected, or by grounding arrangements that can be altered without compromising our safety - all at reasonable cost.
