From roaming the halls on a hovercraft powered by a leaf blower to being immobilized inside a trash bag during an air pressure demonstration, 32 central Ohio science teachers embraced their role as students during the OP2: Operation Physics graduate course at Otterbein University. For two weeks, these teachers participated in a variety of hands-on experiments and activities, which can be adapted for use in the classroom, to help them learn basic physical science concepts appropriate for middle school. The course covered topics in sounds, light, color and vision, electricity, magnetism, properties of matter, energy, measurement, forces and motion, simple machines, fluid dynamics and astronomy. “We want teachers to understand the science of each of these concepts and how the course topics link to the Ohio Academic Content Standards,” said Wendy Sherman-Heckler, associate professor and coordinator of OP2: Operation Physics. “We want them to take away from the course some ideas on how to teach and assess student learning around these topics.” The Operation Physics course will continue with five one-day sessions through March 2011, and the teachers will attend the Science Education Council of Ohio Conference in February. They are also doing homework in their own classrooms by designing pre- and post-tests to measure whether their students’ understanding of science improve under the new teaching techniques.
