It's caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is carried by the anopheles mosquito and passed on to people through mosquito bites. Around 1,750 people a year in the UK are infected with malaria while abroad. Worldwide, almost one million people die from malaria each year. There are four different types of Plasmodium parasite that can infect people and cause malaria: Plasmodium falciparum is the most severe form and causes around eight out of 10 malaria infections. Executive Summary Malaria imposes enormous human suffering and economic costs on many poor countries. For South Africa, which has a relatively minor malaria problem for a developing country, from 2000 to 2002 the economic cost ranged between US$15 million and US$41 million, excluding estimates of the human suffering and estimates of lost investment in malarial areas. The methods of controlling and treating the disease are well known and include indoor residual spraying of insecticides. One insecticide in particular, DDT, revolutionized indoor residual spraying because it was cheap, easy to use, and long lasting. Because of DDT's continuing effectiveness and the need to rotate insecticides to prevent insect resistance, many countries still rely on DDT for malaria control. As this paper shows, when countries bow to international pressure and stop using DDT, the effects can be disastrous. Malaria control programs, therefore, must use indoor residual spraying of DDT to reduce the overall disease burden, so that countries can afford to purchase expensive, but effective, new drugs to treat the remaining cases.

Extractions: The vaccine has been proven effective between 30 and 60 percent of the time to those over one year old. At a 30% effectiveness rate, the vaccine could protect 100 million people from malaria, and could save 1 million lives out of an annual death toll of 3 million. No vaccine has ever protected that many people. Patarroyo claims that his work and the efforts of his Third World colleagues are often treated with a condescension bordering on racism by northern scientists. He points out that it took his Bogota laboratory four years to develop the world's first safe and effective malaria vaccine, but six years to have it recognized. There were discussions with a major pharmaceutical company to manufacture the vaccine in Switzerland, but that would have made the price very high. Patarroyo insisted that the vaccine be produced in Columbia, in order to keep the price low. If produced in Europe or the US, the price per dose would have been $10, but by producing the vaccine in Colombia, it is estimated that it will cost 40 cents per dose.
