From tropical coral reefs to polar-ice edge communities, and from tiny zooplankton to polar bears, scientists have documented worrying declines in marine life which they believed could be at attributed, at least partly, to the impact of global warming. The new report, "Turning Up the Heat: How Global Warming Threatens Life in the Sea" - compiled by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI) - warned that whole species could be wiped out by warmer waters. The report was based on an extensive review of studies and a meeting earlier this year of some of the world's leading marine researchers. It said that warmer surface air temperatures, which most scientists blamed on the emission of greenhouse gases, also were gradually warming the world's oceans. Surface water temperature had risen by about one degree Celsius over the past century and were expected to increase by up to another three degrees in the next 100 years if emissions - caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels like oil and gas - continued at current rates.

Crab Island is the most significant breeding site in the western Torres Strait. Breeding may also occur on the islands of the southern Great Barrier Reef, and on mainland beaches and offshore islands north of Gladstone. Natator depressus Hawksbill Sea Turtle Eretmochelys imbricata Hawksbill Sea Turtle The hawksbill turtle has been declared a critically endangered species mostly because it was hunted for flesh (good eating) and the shell which is used as primary source for tortoise shell material. Found predominantly in tropical reefs of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic, E. imbricata is the one most associated with tropical waters. Some of the places where you could see the hawksbill turtles include the Gulf of Mexico, the Brazilian coast (specifically Bahia), southern Florida and Hawaii, on the beaches of Antigua and Barbuda, in Costa Rica (specifically close to Tortuguero), the Island of Cuba, in Puerto Rico near Mona Island, close to Cape of Good Hope in Africa, across the entire Indonesian archipelago, the Japanese archipelago, New Zealand and on the the northwestern coast of Australia.

Extractions: Just days before the start of the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas ( ICCAT ), a new report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has detailed a vast global blackmarket in critically endangered Atlantic bluefin tuna and the widespread fraud that is enabling it. The report, Looting the Seas : How Overfishing, Fraud, and Negligence Plundered the Majestic Bluefin Tuna , paints a sobering picture of irresponsible and even criminal fishing practices and the complicit regulatory bodies that have allowed the eastern Atlantic bluefin spawning stock to be depleted to a quarter of what it was just four decades ago. The report traces the frequently illegal process from catch (often in "purse seine" nets that can catch as many as 3000 of the giant fish at once) to rancher (where the fish are fattened to increase their market value) to trader (where the documents are often falsified to cover for illegal takes). Along the way, details of the size of the catch are obscured or totally eliminated, rendering take quotas practically ineffective.

The tuna, which migrates across the Atlantic to spawn in the Gulf of Mexico, faces extinction due to severe fishing pressure and habitat degradation, including effects of the BP oil spill. The Center filed its Endangered Species Act petition in May; the agency has missed the 90-day legal response deadline. “The oil well is capped, but the effects of the spill on bluefin tuna will be seen for years to come,” said Catherine Kilduff, a Center oceans program attorney. “Tuna were already struggling in the Gulf; the spill made the problem worse. If the government doesn’t move quickly, the question won’t be when the tuna will recover, but if they’ll survive at all.” Overfishing of Atlantic bluefin tuna has caused more than an 80 percent decline from what the population would be absent fishing pressure. The millions of gallons of oil that gushed into the Gulf of Mexico and into tuna breeding grounds during spawning season threaten to further reduce the western Atlantic population. Its vast size and depth and unexplored frontiers made the ocean appear invulnerable to overexploitation. The truth is that the populations of many species are decreasing at an unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine life families such as whales dolphins manatees and dugongs , salmon, seabirds, sea turtles, and sharks to name a few, are on the rise. The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because marine animals are not as visible as animals on land. But unfortunately, marine creatures are equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as habitat destruction and overexploitation. Shallow water animals that breathe air, like turtles, manatees, dugongs, and whales are often hit by boats and caught in fishing gear. Species such as turtles that lay their eggs on land often lose their nurseries due to coastal development. Animals that have taken millions of years to evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems, have and continue to vanish from places where they once flourished. Loss of habitats , the spread of disease, pollution , and unsustainable fishing practices are directly related to the actions of humans and recovery from these problems is rarely straightforward. Many marine species live in small, specific habitats while others require protection across their migration routes that cover vast areas and include breeding and feeding grounds. Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been designated in many places worldwide, which can help protect and restore threatened species, but MPAs are limited in size and therefore, limited to the marine life that inhabits those areas.
