PEPG Other Events The Blaine, or “KnowNothing” Amendments, bar entry for inner city students to high quality education in Massachusetts’ parochial schools. http://www.hks.harvard.edu/pepg/Other_Events.htm
Extractions: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM The most exciting innovation in education policy in the last decade is the emergence of highly effective schools in our nation's inner-cities; schools where disadvantaged teens make enormous gains in academic achievement. In his new book, Sweating the Small Stuff: Inner-City Schools and the New Paternalism David Whitman takes readers inside six of these secondary schools and reveals the secret to their success: they are paternalistic. The schools teach teens how to act according to traditional, middle-class values, set and enforce exacting academic standards, and closely supervise student behavior. But unlike paternalistic institutions of the past, these schools are warm, caring places, where teachers and principals form paternal-like bonds with students. At this forum, Whitman will discuss how though little explored to date, the new paternalistic schools are the most promising means yet for closing the nation's achievement gap.
Film Reviews Surely this is because he filmed School Ties right near me, at two Massachusetts parochial schools. This movie was released a month or two after Encino http://webspace.webring.com/people/fu/um_11747/Film_Reviews.htm
Extractions: Absolutely Biased Descriptions of Brendan's Many Movies NEW! Seven stunning snapshots in the School Ties Gallery . I fixed it! It works now! Dogfight 1991) is a cute River Phoenix movie (also starring Lili Taylor) about a Vietnam veteran remembering his girlfriend as he returns home. Brendan plays Sailor #1 (I'm not positive which number sailor he is), who incites a fight in an arcade. Not only did he become eligible for Screen Actors Guild membership by acting in this film, but he also injured himself during the fight scene, and I guess he recieved compensation pay. The credits spell his name incorrectly, but rent Dogfight anyway because you'll enjoy the chemistry between Phoenix and Taylor, and Brendan looks great in uniform. It's a humble beginning for his acting career. Guilty Until Proven Innocent (1991) is a Lifetime Original Movie that I have never seen, but I figured I'd include it anyway so you can view a more complete list. Encino Man (1992) can be a riot, if you're willing to let your brain atrophy for 88 minutes, and as long as Pauly Shore (from whom Brendan steals the whole show) doesn't set your teeth on edge. Watch Encino Man for Bren's first (and less-publicized) loincloth scene, as well as for his Monkey Dance at the Senior Prom. Unfortunately,Encino Man set the stereotype into motion that Brendan is a talentless monkey-boy. We know better, however, and we can appreciate the movie as a showcase for Bren's ability for physical comedy.
Extractions: Journal Sports Writer Shock is probably the best way to describe the look on the faces of some Catholic Memorial hockey fans last Friday night at the Dedham (Mass.) Ice Arena after Mount St. Charles had handed CM its first loss of the season. You can understand their consternation. Even if the Rhode Island team is Mount St. Charles. In Rhode Island, a parochial school has won 30 of the last 32 major state hockey titles, including 26 in a row by Mount St. Charles from 1978 to 2003. Since Massachusetts began its Super Eight Tournament 18 years ago, 16 of the state titles have been won by either Catholic Memorial or Boston College High, with Catholic Memorial taking 12. Even considering that a few of the Mount St. Charles players come from Massachusetts towns that border Woonsocket, such as Bellingham, Medway and Franklin, the Rhode Island parochial schools are drawing from a Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts population, which is only slightly over a million. There are 255 boys hockey teams in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Association. There are 35 in the R.I. Interscholastic League.

The Berkshire Conferences on the History of Women (BCHW) are sponsored by the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians (BCHW), though many members of the BCWH do not specialize in women's history. At the 1972 regular meeting of the BCWH, Lois Banner and Mary Hartman suggested that, in view of the increased interest in women's history, the organization sponsor a conference in that field. The group agreed and the two historians organized the first Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, which was held at Rutgers University in 1973. The papers of this conference were not collected at the Schlesinger Library; some were published in
