The sixteenth edition of Medical Microbiology has reached a significant milestone as it is 75 years since the first edition of Mackie and McCartney's An Introduction to Practical Bacteriology as Applied to Medicine and Public Health first appeared. There have been remarkable advances in medical microbiology in the intervening years; for example, antibiotics were unknown when the original text was published in 1925. The fifteenth edition was published in 1997 and in the past five years there have been many significant developments in medical microbiology, particularly in the areas of microbial genetics, pathogenesis and immune response to infection. The current edition addresses many of the developments in revised chapters, and there is a new chapter covering medical entomology. The book is divided into six parts and deals with viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites under the headings of microbial biology, infection and immunity, pathogens and their associated diseases, and the treatment and control of infection. There is an enormous wealth of information in the 709 pages of this excellent text.
