    Extractions: Founded in 1962, THE MIDWEST MEDIEVAL HISTORY CONFERENCE has no dues or formal membership. It is an ad hoc group existing primarily to hold annual meetings which move among various host institutions in the Midwest each fall. The 2009 meeting was held at the University of Notre Dame; that of 2010 will be held at the Ohio State University. Other meetings have been held at such diverse places as the Universities of Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Illinois; Saint Louis, Purdue, and Ohio State Universities; and the Pontifical Institute for Mediæval Studies in Toronto. The MIDWEST MEDIEVAL HISTORY CONFERENCE also sponsors one or more sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies held each spring at Western Michigan University. It is one of the oldest if not the oldest constituent group of the Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA) of the Medieval Academy of America.

You might feel that the question is moot: students do study and will study ancient cultures; such study is an expected part of a tradition of intellectual development. The response to the why of the initial question is a matter of tradition, if not fact. A study of the ROMAN EMPIRE a reading of Greek philosophy and literature, a look at the PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT these are all accepted parts of a Western education, aren't they? Probably so: even today, in the plurality of approaches to the study of history and to the study of cultures, people talk about PLATO or DANTE or Krishna or Mohammed. But there is an important proviso: How you approach ancient cultures (or any other culture, for that matter) and how you conceive of the people of such distant worlds are of paramount importance. At this point, you might ask yourself these two additional questions: Do we study these cultures because, to some extent, all cultures share certain characteristics? Does our own culture reflect aspects of these other cultures? The answer to the first of the two questions has historically been found in a discussion of universality.     Extractions: I'm at that stage in the week where I'm almost convinced I might have too much paper. You know, that moment when paper spawning has happened and paper reduction has not? I'm up late anyway, doing this and that so I'll have a clear run to get big stuff done tomorrow and have everything ready for Sydney so that when I get back I can get stuck into reviewing and research. I just spent a half day and a whole evening doing fairly drudging work and wondering why I couldn't stop. Five hours ago I had what I went in for, but I still I kept analysing the bibliographies I did earlier in the year and considering what I needed to work with next. Line by line by line, for hours. Those bibliographies are the background research for the novel (I have a whole other set for the dissertation - I do like my bibliographies), so the bit of my brain that was bored to tears was applying it to the novel and saying "You're not even ready for this until next year. Go do something useful."
