Microbial ecology is the study of the role of microbes which appear to be necessary for the functioning of life on Earth. Microbial ecologists seek to understand how microbes affect the environment on a global scale. Microbes probably contribute to global change, nutrient cycling, and ozone depletion. Microbial ecology is the study of microbial interactions with plants and with animals and with other microbes. Microbial ecology is an applied science. Knowledge of microbial ecology contributes to environmental protection, agriculture, mining, food production, and chemical and pharmaceuticals production. Microbial ecology is a rapidly developing scientific discipline. The reasons for this include the realization that microbes are essential for a healthy environment; they are important in helping us understand the mechanics of evolution; and they are important in biotechnology.

Extractions: Microbial Ecology Bacteria are the most diverse and versatile creatures on Earth, and they largely control the rates at which elements cycle in the environment. Although they are microscopic, the mass of all microbes is equivalent that of all plants. Ecologists have long been interested in microbes, but have lacked the proper tools to observe them in detail. That has now changed with the advent of molecular and isotopic techniques. One of our specialty areas is the microbial ecology of rusty roots. Wetland plant roots are often encrusted with rusty-red iron oxide minerals that harbor bacteria capable of using iron to gain energy. We are interested in how plants, iron-eating bacteria and iron minerals interact because it affects methane-producing bacteria, and therefore rates of global warming. A second area of interest is the effect of elevated CO on microbial community composition and microbial activity.

During the rest of the course, experts will introduce current topics in microbial ecology. Participants are asked to discuss recent publications that they have obtained some weeks before the start of the course. Topics to be discussed include growth and survival, adaptive strategies, resource competition, trophic interactions and functional diversity. Within these subjects, specific aspects of freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats will be discussed. Halfway the course, a visit will be made to an institute performing research on microbial ecology. Throughout the course, the participating PhD students are supposed to take an active role. They are invited to present a poster of their own research project, and to discuss the progress of their project with the experts and the other PhD students.
