Overall, Artsakh hosts several thousand architectural artifacts and historical monuments in a larger sense. In addition to ecclesiastical structures, this number includes samples of civil architecture, ancient castles and fortresses as well as numerous khachkars. The art and architecture created in Nagorno Karabakh has progressed through the same major stages as did Armenian art in a larger sense. They began developing in the pre-Christian times, proceeded through the adoption of Christianity early in the fourth century, and entered the era of modernity after blossoming in the Middle Ages. The principal expression of Artsakh’s art in the Middle Ages was through ecclesiastical architecture: churches, cathedrals, chapels and monasteries. Most other forms of art in that period, including illuminated manuscripts

Controversial documentary screening condemned The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) was launched in November 2008, having been initially established four years earlier as the London Azerbaijan Society. Its objective is to promote Azerbaijan to international audiences and create a sense of community for expatriate Azeris. There are hundreds of TEAS members, and the Society regularly organises Azeri events across Europe in order to raise awareness of the unique, rich and varied culture of the region. TEAS also operates as a networking forum, focusing on areas such as business development, diplomatic relations, culture and education to promote greater understanding and co-operation between Europe and Azerbaijan.

"The dreary language of the resolution," writes Thomas de Waal in his fine new book Black Garden: Armenia and Azerbaijan Through Peace and War , "hid something truly revolutionary." The resolution helped trigger a cycle of events that sparked the first inter-ethnic war of the Perestroika era, Mikhail Gorbachev's ill-fated attempt to reanimate the Soviet Union. The "hot" phase of the Karabakh conflict lasted six years, claiming an estimated 15,000 lives and creating a wrenching population "transfer." The warfare displaced hundreds of thousands Armenians and Azerbaijanis. The two countries remain stalemated to this day on a political settlement. [ For background see the Eurasia Insight archive Today, the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh located within the boundaries of Azerbaijan but populated largely by Armenians has become one of those "political flashpoints" that few beyond the region understand or pay much heed to. Journalist Thomas de Waal, a veteran observer of the Caucasus, helps fill the need for an authoritative, clear-eyed, balanced account of a conflict that only occasionally appears on the international media radar screen.
