It is bounded by the state of South Dakota to the north, with the Missouri River making up about one-fourth of that boundary and the whole of Nebraska's boundaries with the states of Iowa and Missouri to the east.     Extractions: Lancaster County was organized in the fall of 1859. There is record of settlement in 1856, as people attempted to settled along Salt Creek. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1857, John D. Prey and his sons and their families. They lived about 15 miles from the current city of Lincoln, on the banks of Salt Creek. Early settlement between 1859-1863 was slow, but the passage of the Homestead Act in 1862 opened up the area. Raymond began in the early 1860s. It was essentially a railroad town, and early settlers either filed homesteads, bought land from the railroad, or filed tree claims. The town began with about 200 people, and early businesses included livery stables, a cheese factory, a flour mill, and a large hotel. Raymond suffered from huge floods, but the building of Branched Oak Reservoir stopped the problem.

Named for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, Fort Kearny afforded a safe haven for pioneers, pony express riders, prospectors and others as they followed the great Platte river road. According to an official War Department report, more than 30,000 people bound for California, Oregon and Utah passed through Fort Kearny during an 18 month period during the gold Rush of 1849. Originally built near Nebraska City, the fort was later relocated to its present site, south of Kearney, to increase military strength in the busy central Nebraska corridor. In its 23 years as the first U.S. Army Post on the Oregon Trail, Fort Kearny was never attacked by Indians. The city of Kearney derives its name from the original fort but due to a postal error an "e" was inadvetently added and then never changed Settlement began in the summer of 1871 when the Rev. and Mrs. Collins entered a homestead claim. The couple lived in a dwelling called Junction House which was also the site of the first post office, the first school district, the first marriage ceremony, and the first church service.

    Extractions: Sidney, Nebraska was recently named one of the Top 100 Rural Communities in America, for communities under 50,000 population!              The community has one of the fastest growing economies in Nebraska with a significant $300 million of community and economic development projects accomplished from1990-2006 and recognized nine times in recent years as “Nebraska’s Community of the Year.”              It’s proud history has unveiled a story of triumph over reversals and setbacks, which would have destroyed the hopes and ambitions of lesser citizens.  Sidney has known its share of adversity, but its citizen participation in every phase of growth and progress has persevered and built a community with a statewide reputation for success.              Sidney was considered the frontier territorial capital of Nebraska’s High Plains region as the oldest settlement in all of western Nebraska.   At one time Cheyenne County’s boundaries expanded over 7,210 square miles of the Nebraska Panhandle and Sidney was its county seat.  It’s territorial jurisdiction was double that size over the entire Panhandle.              It was laid out in 1867 by the Union Pacific Railroad and named for Sidney Dillon, then President of the Union Pacific.   Frequent skirmishes between native Americans and railroad workers led to the establishment of a military outpost.  A town site was established the summer of the same year.   Sidney Barracks later became Fort Sidney, but not until Oct 8, 1884, did the City of Sidney officially incorporate as a municipality.
