The style originates directly from the island of Okinawa in Japan. It was founded by Master Chojun Miyagi (1888 - 1953). He was born on 24 April, 1888 in Naha, the capital city of Okinawa, the largest island in the Ryu Kyu chain. Miyagi Sensei was originally a personal student of Okinawan Karate Master and founder of Naha-te, Kanryo Higaonna (1853 - 1916), and developed Goju Ryu Karate after intensive study in both Okinawan and Chinese Martial Arts. In 1915, he travelled to China to study Chinese Wushu (fighting arts) at Fuzhou in southern China where he remained until 1917. This was one of 3 trips he made to China during his lifetime. Miyagi Chojun Sensei dedicated his whole life to Karate. He was responsible for structuring Naha-te (which he later named 'Goju Ryu') into a systematized discipline which could be taught to society in general. Miyagi Sensei passed away on October 8th, 1953, leaving a great legacy behind. He predicted that during the twentieth century Karate would spread throughout the world. This prediction has been realised. It is not only practised in Okinawa and the rest of Japan, but it can be found throughout the countries of the world. It is an art with no boundaries, an art for all nations and peoples of the world.

The first Polynesians seems to have settled mainly on the east coast of the island as it had a more temperate climate. They also introduced animals as dogs and small Polynesian rat. The Kumara is a sweet potato originally from tropical areas. It makes part of the Convolvulaceae plant family. It was the main cultivation of the pre-european Maori.The Kumara was easily grown in the North Island. The European came in New Zealand around 1642, the first to discover the islands were the fleet of the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman. He came with two ships the Zeehaen and the Heemskerck. During 1769 and 1770 the captain James Cook of the HM Bark Endeavour visited New Zealand. As from 1790 the British, French and American came along the waters of New Zealand and sometimes this made conflicts with the Maori people. When around the 1800s the traders arrived this gave even more conflicts between them. The first child born from European in New Zealand was Thomas King. He was born in 1815 in the Bay of Islands. The treaty of Waitangi was signed in February 1840 exactly on the 6, in the Bay of the Islands, between Maori chiefs and British. William Hobson represented Britain. For the British at this time the treaty was to make of New Zealand a British colony. There were two version of this treaty one was in English and the other one in Maori.

No one can nail down exactly where they came from, but a quick look at a map of the South Pacific leads most scholars to believe that the Maori waka began their voyage from Fucking Ages Away. This began Aotearoa’s love affair with the sea. It took a while for Pakeha to get interested in it though. In the early 1990s, 600 years after the Maori waka arrived in New Zealand, Kiwis started getting serious about water again. The Americas Cup, the oldest contested trophy in sports, was up for grabs, Russell Coutts and Brad Butterworth led the charge and the nation wore red socks in support of our sailors, despite never caring about them before. Also beaten: the Americas Cup Trophy, by a Maori “activist” in 1997, resulting in the trophy getting sent back to the original silversmith company who built it in 1843 and being repaired. Benjamin Nathan claimed that white exploitation of Maori was the reason behind his attack on the Americas Cup, but we at Nexus believe it was actually more to do with the trophy being extremely ugly.

    New Zealand was one of the last places to be inhabited by people. Around 950AD the Maori arrived from Polynesia. First European to see NZ officially was Tasman in 1642.

    Extractions: The first European to see New Zealand officially was the Dutch sailor, Abel Janszoon Tasman in December 1642 although there is evidence of Spanish or Portuguese caravels visiting the North Island in a earlier period. Maori war parties prevented Abel Tasman from actually landing initially but he is recorded as the first European to climb Mount Victoria in the Auckland harbour . In 1769-70 Captain James Cook circumnavigated and charted New Zealand. Initial contact with the Maori was also violent but in many areas his ship was welcomed and the scientific nature of his visit was carried out with his ship wintering over in the scenic Malbough Sounds. From 1839 to 1841, New Zealand was administered as part of the New South Wales colony. In 1840 the Maori ceded the sovereignty of New Zealand to the British in exchange for protection and guarantees on their land fearing colonisation by France. For almost 20 years however, there was intermittent fighting between different Maori tribes and colonists over disputes to land and trading rights. In 1860 British troops and native irregular troops were used to finally overcome Maori resistance to the British administration and land use.
