Many school districts in the United States feature alternative schools, which are usually established to give students having a hard time in regular classrooms a different environment in which to learn. Some schools allow students to graduate with a degree, and some serve as temporary programs until the students can return to their original schools. North Carolina's alternative schools offer an array of services including counseling, behavior modification programs, evening classes and programs for students with learning disabilities. Sellars-Gunn Education Center in Burlington features several alternative programs, including vocational and technical education, an evening program, and a learning center for both middle school and high school students, which offers individualized instruction. Sellars-Gunn has its own "turning point" program, wherein students with behavioral problems can continue to learn in small classrooms and work at developing more positive attitudes and behavior. Students are rewarded using a point system, and once they are demonstrate success in the program they return to their home school.
