Link to additional resources for oceanography and marine science careers Oceanography is interdisciplinary, meaning that oceanographers use their knowledge about several basic science fields like chemistry, geology, physics, meteorology, biology, or mathematics to better understand the ocean. Students attending oceanographic institutions will likely specialize in one of the four main areas of oceanography: Physical oceanographers study oceanic circulation, its influence on biological and chemical processes, and the interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere. They also study water masses in the ocean and how energy from the sun or wind reacts with the sea, and apply principles of physics to gain knowledge about ocean circulation. Chemical oceanographers study natural and man-made chemical compounds in the ocean's waters and seafloor, interactions of atmospheric compounds with the ocean's surface, and dissolved and suspended materials in the water column. Geological oceanographers study the shape and material of the seafloor, the origin of seafloor sediments, causes of geological formations, and predict geological events (such as seafloor volcanoes).

The study of carbon and its role in global climate change has captured the attention of chemical oceanographers for decades. Since the industrialization of the 18th century, researchers estimate that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by 25 percent. Although the scientific debate continues over whether the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide has caused global warming or vice versa, it is generally accepted that modern society has added to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In fact, employment of oceanographers, geoscientists who study the world's oceans and coastal waters, is projected to grow more than 20 percent from 2006 to 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Another indicator of the importance of oceanographers is the salary the position demands: the highest paid geoscientists bring home upward of $135,000 each year. As of May 2006, the middle 50 percent of U.S. geoscientists brought home between $51,860 and $100,650 annually, according to BLS. The median annual earnings were $72,660 with the lowest 10 percent of geoscientists earning less than $39,740 and the highest 10 percent making annual salaries of more than $135,950.
