Museum Of Anthropology Exhibit Explores Papua New Guinea Culture Museum of Anthropology exhibit explores Papua New Guinea culture. September 4, 2007. A new permanent exhibit, “Face to Face The Arts of Exchange in Mainland Papua New Guinea http://www.wfu.edu/news/release/2007.09.04.a.php
Extractions: September 4, 2007 Over a period of years, the museum has gathered a significant collection of items representing many of the diverse groups living in Papua New Guinea, an island nation located north of Australia. "All the objects in the exhibit are decorated with faces, primarily spirit faces,” said Beverlye Hancock, the curator of the exhibit. “Everything from pots to cook in to objects used in men’s ceremonial houses have faces on them. The faces represent very powerful and protective spirits.” Many of the items were collected in the 1960s by Joan and William Kapfer when they were technical assistants to the Lutheran Mission in the Highlands near Mt. Hagan. Additional items were given to the museum by other donors who worked or traveled in Papua New Guinea, including Frank Dixon Underwood, Russell Olson, Nancy Sokal, Adele LaBrecque, Gordon Hanes and a group of anonymous donors. Dr. David and Karina Rilling contributed pots and dishes with ancestor and nature images modeled and engraved on their surfaces. Papua New Guinea has an ancient past but its more isolated regions have only become known to the outside world since the 1930s. The main island, the second largest in the world, has a diversity of environments, peoples and languages, but the many rivers and their tributaries serve as highways on which canoes move goods from people to people and place to place. The exhibit also explores the type and importance of trade networks between people in the area.

Nevertheless, an increasing number of governments recognise the importance of culture in itself and in connection to social and economic development. Part twenty-seven in a series on cultural policy in non-Western countries. May 2007 - Papua New Guinea is known to be the most culturally diverse country in the world. More than eight hundred different population groups with their own language live in the archipelago. But since it gained independence from Australia in 1975, the country's government has faced a complicated challenge: which language will unify the country?

Today there are 5,130,560, people living in Papua New Guinea – more than a third of them in the rugged Highlands. Papua New Guinea's culture is extremely diverse and, within each region, visitors will experience a rich variety of traditional customs. The traditional Melanesian cultures – more than 200 have been identified – are kept alive in elaborate rituals involving deaths, feasts, marriages, compensation ceremonies and initiation rites. Visitors to country areas, especially in the highlands, will often find local variations in village construction, dialect and dress. The Highlands has more than 60 separate languages, cultures and traditions. The colorful Huli Wigman and the Asaro Mudmen can be seen in traditional bilas (costume) during cultural shows, where local Sing Sings and exhibitions of dances are accompanied by the beat of ‘kundu’ drums. The Goroka and Mount Hagen Cultural Shows are so popular that accommodation bookings have to be made a year in advance. Port Moresby, the gateway to Papua New Guinea, is known for the exciting Hiri Moale Festival. This recreates the epic voyages undertaken by the Motuans of Papua, who traded clay pots for sago with the Gulf people. This unique barter system ensured the survival of Motuans and, in return, provided the Gulf people with clay pots for domestic use. Another fascinating cultural event is the Yam Harvest Festival by the Trobriand Islanders of the Milne Bay Province. The festival highlights the workmanship of the people who use traditional methods of planting and harvesting yams.

Search 5 September 2006, 06:07AM The government's ongoing failure to tackle violence against women in Papua New Guinea has resulted in this violence becoming so pervasive that it impedes national development and contributes to the spread of HIV/AIDS, according to a new report by Amnesty International. "Violence against women is endemic in Papua New Guinea: it affects the majority of women and girls in some parts of the country. Apologists for this violence, including in government, cling to tired old excuses such as culture, tradition or lack of resources," said Purna Sen, Asia Pacific Director at Amnesty International as she launched the report from the capital Port Moresby. "This report shatters those defences. Amnesty International has researched violence against women across the world, from Sweden to Colombia to the Solomon Islands - and we have seen governments invoke the same justifications everywhere. But there are no excuses - governments are obliged under international law to protect women from violence, no matter where, when or from whom."

Gang rapes, knife attacks on wives, beating and sexual abuse of girls and torture and murder of female "sorcerers" are among the many forms of violence against women in Papua New Guinea. The threat of rape, sexual assault and other violence is so great that women and girls cannot freely move round their communities, go to school, to the market or to work. The state's failure to enable women to become safely involved in civil and economic life severely constrains the full use of resources for national development.

Rituals associated with yams form the basis of the spiritual life of the Abelam. Figure 1: Yam lining in the south Wosera, late 1980s The Abelam cultivate gardens of yams ( mami in tok pisin) as their main staple crop. The yams can be stored for up to six months. They also grow beans, taro, bananas, tobacco, maize and sweet potatoes, as well as small cash crops of coffee, rubber and cocoa. A population of over 40,000 people in this language group lives in the lower inland foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains and down into the plains on the north side of the Middle Sepik River. The main road through this area goes to the towns of Maprik and Hayfield which are about 140 km from the coastal, provincial capital of Wewak. A side road from Hayfield branches down through the south Wosera to the Sepik River landing of Pagwi. Unlike the stilt houses built above the flood plains of the Sepik, the Abelam village houses hug closer to the warmth of the earth. Their A-frame Haus Tambarans start low in the back and soar up to heights of 80 feet (27 meters) under the pitched, overhanging front with thick thatch roofs sweeping down to the ground.
