EGYPTIAN WARS Pyramids at Giza People tend to think that Egyptian building styles stayed the same for the whole period of Egyptian history, from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the end of the New Kingdom two thousand years later, but that's not true. The Egyptians built different kinds of buildings at different times, just like any other group of people. In the early part of the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians built mainly mastabas, a kind of tomb with a flat roof like a house. Then throughout most of the Old Kingdom , the Egyptians built the pyramid tombs which are now so famous. Of course they also built smaller buildings like houses and butcher shops In the Middle Kingdom , the mastaba tomb came back again, although in a more elaborate form for the Pharaohs. They didn't build any more pyramids. New Kingdom temple of Amon at Luxor Then in the New Kingdom there was a lot of building that was not tombs: temples for the gods especially, but also palaces for the Pharaohs. Extractions: of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica Mayan archaeology program expands in 2009-2010, adding portable 3D laser scanning technology. Our major programs in 2010 will be 3D scanning for preservation and documentation of cultural heritage. We are working with companies in Europe and the US to train our staff in Guatemala. FLAAR Mesoamerica will thus be the first local 3D scanning resource center in-situ in Central America (other scanners come down for a few weeks, and then go back to the US or Europe). FLAAR feels that the scanners should also be operated by Guatemalans, both professors and students, so that this technology will not merely belong to US and European institutions. Three Guatemalan biologists work with FLAAR full-time in-house on staff. They are preparing a list of fruits, vegetables, and animals to 3D scan as well. First will be pataxte and cacao pods, for a research project on Dr Nicholas Hellmuth to document the differences between pataxte form of cacao among the Mayas compared with the normal cacao. Pataxte and cacao pods look similar in some respects but other aspects of their ethnobotany are completely different. FLAAR works at providing Guatemalan students opportunities to learn new technology, so flew two from Guatemala for training near Boston.

From the Old Kingdom onward, stone was generally reserved for tombs and temples , while bricks were used even for royal palaces, fortresses, the walls of temple precincts and towns, and for subsidiary buildings in temple complexes. Ancient Egyptian houses were made out of mud collected from the Nile river. It was placed in molds and left to dry in the hot sun to harden for use in construction.

To construct such great monuments required a mastery of architecture, social organization , and art that few cultures of that period could achieve. The oldest pyramid, the Step-Pyramids, grow out of the abilities of two men, King Djoser and Imhotep. Djoser, the second king of 3rd dynasty, was the first king to have hired an architect, Imhotep, to design a tomb ( Time-Life Books , 74). Imhotep was known as the father of mathematics, medicine, architecture, and as the inventor of the calendar (White, 40). He had a great idea of stacking mastabas until they reached six tiers, a total of 60 meters high and its base 180 meters by 108 meters (Casson, 118). A glistening costing of limestone was added to the mastabas that made them shimmer in the sun. The main feature of the pyramid was its 92-foot underground shafts and burial room lined with pink granite. It was the first time that this feature appeared (White, 41). Imhotep surrounded Djoser’s pyramid with a number of funerary courtyards and temples. He then, surrounded these complexes with a mile long protective wall ( Time-Life Books , 74). Pyramids Tombs Temples Statues and Monuments Probably the most famous structure in all of Egypt, the Pyramids are still on of the worlds best architectural achievement, even though they were built many centuries ago. These structures can be as tall as 482 feet (147 m) high. The Pyramid towers over many other famous landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty. The first true pyramid was build at saqqara for the king Zoser. It was called a step pyramid because of its step shape. The later pyramids were smooth sided, like the Great Pyramid at Giza, built for the king Khufu about 4,500 years ago. The smooth sided pyramid was built from the Dynasty IV and on. They were built by first having men chisel the block of granite the way that they wanted it. The stonemasons used special rods to check that a stone block was cut accurately. Next, the blocks stayed in the quarry until the flood season. They did this so they could use barges to haul over the heavy granite blocks. Once the boast had arrived near the pyramid and unloaded the blocks, they were hauled up a ramp. Then, ropes and levers were used to maneuver the huge blocks into position. The overseer checked that every block was laid correctly. Once all of the granite blocks were placed in place, laborers rubbed the casing blocks with polishing stones until they would shine in the sun. The overseers used plump lines to check that the angle of the slope was correct.
