The railroad was built on land granted to it by the government. The land grant for the construction of the Illinois Central was made possible by special legislation implemented by Abraham Lincoln and Stephan A. Douglas. (Abe Lincoln was an attorney for the Illinois Central before becoming president.) The Illinois Central line was at one time the longest in the world. A section is still in place on the west side of the Mendota Depot/museum. (The Illinois Central’s advertising slogan was The Mainline of Mid-America .) Mendota quickly became a big railroad town because it was a major interchange point for freight and passengers. The Illinois Central freight house, which was built in 1854, still stands in Mendota. It is the oldest brick structure in town.

Click on any image for larger view Photos on this page courtesy Rick Schroeder and Bob Gallippi The depot, built by the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad in 1903, has been restored to the 1950's era of that former road. The building sits adjacent to the Chicago-Nashville mainline of CSX Transportation , formerly known as the Seaboard System and earlier the Lousville and Nashville Railroad. The depot has been leased from these lines since 1976. The museum features a collection of railroadiana material from various railroads in the area. Those featured include the C&EI, Wabash, Illinois Terminal and NYC. The operator's bay has been restored with operating telegraph keys and sounders. Dwarf signals of several styles light the agent's room. The collection includes many laterns, the bass drum from the C&EI "Flyer Band" of the 1920's and a four foot high replica of the front end of a C&EI F-unit from the 1949 Chicago Railroad Fair. Also included are the trophy case and train board from the Danville station, the train order signal and control panel from North Yard interlocking in Danville, playing cards, china and other items too numerous to mention.

The beautiful French Chateauesque building was completed in 1892 and was a bustling hub of activity for much of the 20th century. In 1910, seven railroads dispatched over 50 trains a day from Duluth. An Immigrants' waiting room served as a small Ellis Island for the region's newest arrivals to await their connections. During times of war, regiments of soldiers would march down Superior Street to board trains for service. The last train pulled out of the station in 1969, and in 1973 work began to restore the Depot and create the museum. Since then, and with the help of thousands of enormously talented and dedicated volunteers, we have been striving to preserve and enrich this historic environment as the zenith of an era past, frozen in time. Along with the trains on display inside the museum is Depot Square, a 3/4 scale recreation Duluth's downtown in 1910. It is claimed that this area had more millionaires per capita than any state in the nation at the turn of the century.
Cimarron Valley Railroad Museum The history and the collection with drawings. Located in Cushing, Oklahoma. http://ok.railfan.net/pages/cvrm.html
Extractions: The Cimarron Valley Railroad Museum of Cushing, Oklahoma was established by the Read family, Robert F. Read, Wife Mazie Cox Read, and Son, Bob Read, Jr. in 1970 with the acquisition of the Santa Fe Depot from Yale, Oklahoma. This particular Depot was the site of E.H Read's first agency, 1933-1936, following long service at Cushing. The family felt it to be the place to house a large and growing collection of railroad memorabilia, so the station was moved to the home acreage 1 1/2 miles south of Cushing. The grounds are bounded by a pine forest, planted in respect to Mazie because of her Kentucky hertiage of the pine clad hills of her native state. In 1974, the museum won an institutional award from the Oklahoma Heritage Association for its preservation of Oklahoma's Rail heritage and history. The Santa Fe Depot houses the bulk of the railroad artifacts, exhibiting a great variety of this rail memorbilia: i.e. A large collection of kerosene burning lanterns, uniform items, timetables, switch keys, locks, signal equipment, dining car china, silver settings, Fred harvey items, pictures, tapes, film, a very extensive railroad library, horns, whistles, bells, station signs, models, coach items, Pullman items, drinking glasses, badges, conductor caps from all major Oklahoma lines, Santa Fe dinner chimes, dining car chairs, linens, early day Santa Fe Transit, railroad advertising items, fire extinguishers, tools, furniture, stoves, fire cart, offical guides, and innumerable miscellaneous items of railroad heritage.

Extractions: Closed Sunday and Monday The Union Pacific Railroad Museum houses one of the oldest corporate collections in the nation. It includes artifacts, photographs and documents that trace the development of the railroad and the American West. The Union Pacific Collection dates to the mid-1800's, featuring original editions of reports from survey teams that searched for the best land route to join the nation, east to west. Surveying equipment, early rail equipment, and artifacts from the construction of the nation's first transcontinental railroad tell the story of one of the world's construction marvels. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 by Union Pacific and its constituent railroads shaped the landscape and geography of the American West. Council Bluffs, the eastern terminus of that landmark railroad, represented the starting point for tens of thousands of westward-bound immigrants.
