Schizoaffective Disorder and Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features have been considered as alternative explanations for the symptoms and have been ruled out. The disturbance must also not be due to the direct physiological effects of use or abuse of a substance (e.g., alcohol, drugs, medications) or a general medical condition. If there is a history of Autistic Disorder or another Pervasive Developmental Disorder, the additional diagnosis of Schizophrenia is made only if prominent delusions or hallucinations are also present for at least a month (or less if successfully treated).

Extractions: On Serendip The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia Anne Frederickson Schizophrenia is a disease that has plagued societies around the world for centuries, although it was not given its formal name until 1911. It is characterized by the presence of positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are so named because of the presence of altered behaviors, such as delusions, hallucinations (usually auditory), extreme emotions, excited motor activity, and incoherent thoughts and speech. In contrast, negative symptoms are described as a lack of behaviors, such as emotion, speech, social interaction, and action. These symptoms are by no means concrete. Not all schizophrenic patients will exhibit all or even a majority of these symptoms, and there is some disagreement in the psychiatric community as to the exact diagnostic criteria. In addition, there is a great deal of debate as to the causes of the disease. While some proposed causes have been proven false, such as bad parenting and poor will power , there are many theories that remain. One of the most famous and most debatable is the dopamine hypothesis. The proposed hypothesis states that the brain of schizophrenic patients produces more dopamine than normal brains. It is this increased dopamine that is believed to be responsible for the symptoms of the disease. However, the is much debate in the scientific community as to the exact mechanism by which altered dopamine levels, especially in the prefrontal cortex, striatum, and limbic system, produce schizophrenia. There is much clinical evidense that provides support for the dopamine hypothesis. The first evidense that dopamine may be involved in schizophrenia came from amphetamine users. Amphetamines work by causing the brain to produce more dopamine and have been shown to produce psychotic-like symptoms.

Extractions: Zomaril, which has an antagonistic activity on a wide spectrum of brain receptors for dopamine and serotonin, with preferential affinity for 5HT2A serotonin receptors in humans, had previously shown activity against both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, as well as a low liability for inducing extrapyramidal symptoms (movement disorders) in Phase II clinical trials. Analysis of the ILP3000 results indicates that Zomaril statistically significantly reduced the symptoms of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder as measured by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and confirmed the excellent tolerability profile, including the lack of extrapyramidal symptoms.

Extractions: We develop and implement Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scan protocols and processing pipelines. Scans are being acquired for this purpose on the 1.5T, 3T and 7T scanners at our hospital on a daily basis. Processing pipelines exist for volume quantification, DTI, resting-state fMRI, BOLD fMRI, TMS-fMRI, and functional DTI. The Neuroimaging Research Group is based in the Psychiatry Department, Neuroscience Division, of the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), The Netherlands. It is also part of the Rudolf Magnus Institute of Neuroscience (RMI), which encompasses many research groups from the UMCU as well as from the Utrecht University.

Kraepelin proposed that schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis were two distinct disorders but since then with abundance of literature on this subject pouring in, the theory is being challenged quite frequently. The number of studies which support the Kraepelinian view of psychosis exceed those which do not. The proponents of continuum theory propose a continuum from unipolar to bipolar disorder to schizoaffective psychosis and right up to schizophrenia. Another hypothesis proposed is that schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder are two distinct entities and that unipolar and schizoaffective disorders are expressed in the relatives of patients in both the categories (Gershon et al, 1988). Rudin (1916) reported that although the risk for schizophrenia for an individual was high (6.2%) if they had a close relative with schizophrenia, it was higher if the ill relative had a non-schizophrenic (mostly affective) psychosis (8.2%) or alcoholism (7.8%). He also found almost equal numbers of relatives with affective disorder and relatives with schizophrenia in the families of his schizophrenic probands. On the other hand, among the psychotic relatives of Odegaard's (1972) manic depressive probands, 19% were diagnosed as schizophrenic, indicating that the co-occurrence may run in both directions.
