Zurückgehend auf Kontratänze wird Scottish Country Dance in Sets von vier (auch drei, fünf oder mehr) Paaren getanzt. Die übliche Aufstellung ist die Gasse, das so genannte Longwise Set . Daneben gibt es auch Aufstellungen im Quadrat ( Square Set ) wie in der Quadrille oder im Squaredance oder dreieckige Sets ( Triangular Set ). Größere Formationen sind beispielsweise Kreistänze wie auch „Round-the-room“-Tänze, bei denen viele Zwei- oder Drei-Paar-Sets einen großen Kreis bilden. Die Tänze selbst bestehen aus aneinandergereihten Figuren, die auf die Phrasen der verwendeten Musik abgestimmt sind. Die Figuren sind in der Regel 2, 4 oder 8 Takte lang. Eine solche Sequenz ist üblicherweise 32 Takte lang, aber auch andere Längen wie 24, 40, 48 oder 64 Takte kommen vor. Diese Sequenz wird von jedem Paar ein- oder mehrmals getanzt. In der Sequenz findet in der Regel eine so genannte Progression statt, so dass sich ein Paar im Laufe des Tanzes vom Anfang an das Ende des Sets bewegt. Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), was founded in 1923 as the Scottish Country Dance Society by Jean Milligan and Ysobel Stewart of Fasnacloich, who wanted to preserve country dancing as performed in Scotland , country dancing having fallen into disuse after the influx of continental ballroom dances such as the waltz or quadrilles and, later on, American-style dances like the One-step or foxtrot . (The SCDS didn't become the RSCDS until the early 1950s.) The RSCDS collected dances from living memory as well as from old (17-19c.) manuscripts and republished them in a series of books. Most of these dances needed some interpretation, and the dance style itself underwent serious standardisation, becoming much more balletic instead of the easy-going style that was the norm in the early 20th century, and which the RSCDS's founders considered sloppy and untraditional. After some argument, in the late 1940s the RSCDS also started publishing newly-devised dances. Today the RSCDS numbers some 20.000 members all over the world, served from the headquarters in

Dancers must remember the proper sequence of figures for a dance. Over 8,000 dances are recorded, of which perhaps a couple of hundred are frequently performed. Don't worry about having to memorize dozens of dances, dances are always published and/or briefed orally before they begin! Men and women dance as a couple, and most dances are performed in a four-couple group called a "set." Dances can be rapid and vigorous (reels and jigs) or slow and graceful (strathspeys). Music may be live or prerecorded, and usually is played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. Bagpipe music is rarely used for Scottish country dancing. While Scottish Highland dance (such as the Sword Dance) is a strenuous, regimented dance style usually done solo or in small groups, Scottish country dance is a truly social dance, with plenty of opportunities to smile and nod at other dancers in your set. Extractions: For further info contact Angus Henry on 8927 9203 or at Our foundation date is 2 October 1985 when, after a few earlier starts and stops, a regular SCD class was started in Darwin in conjunction with a small Scottish "ethnic" group, and taught by the only experienced SCD teacher in Darwin. By unanimous agreement of its members the class was taught to RSCDS standards rather than just as a "Saturday Night Hop". After a couple of years of financial problems, increasing interference, and then formal complaints (from some who were only wanting the dance class as a recruitment window) that learning one new dance every six weeks was too demanding while good and keen dancers were being driven away, it was agreed to have two weekly classes, one for those who wished to socialise with the occasional dance while the other would carry on with the original aims and standards for those who wanted to dance. Support for the original dance class, including insurance, hall hire, equipment, etc was abruptly terminated without notice in January 1988 by the group, with only eight days to go before the start of the new year's dancing in a new venue. The class with its very few remaining members had to very quickly reorganise and establish itself as a legal entity in order to continue delivery of the original provision of SCD for Darwin, but by April 1988 the new Scottish Country Dancing Association of Darwin Inc had become an Affiliated Group of the RSCDS, as a pledge to maintain our support for the work of the Society.
