The Irish language served as a literary language in Scotland until the development of an independent literary tradition in Scottish Gaelic. Among the earliest Lowland Scots literature is John Barbour 's Brus (14th century), Whyntoun's Kronykil and Blind Harry 's Wallace (15th century). From the 13th century much literature was produced by writers based around the royal court in Edinburgh and the University of St. Andrews Alexander Montgomerie , the 16th century poet, for example, was in the service of King James VI . As the Norman nobles of Scotland assimilated to indigenous culture they commissioned Scots versions of popular continental romances, for example:

Studies in Scottish Literature , an annual, refereed academic journal, is the foremost periodical in Scottish literary studies. The Scots Teaching and Research Network (STARN) at the University of Glasgow maintains a wonderful collection of Scottish literary resources and online texts. Initially you will be introduced to the rise of the great tradition of Scottish fiction, looking at work by Scott, Hogg and Galt down to Gibbon, Gunn and the moderns like Spark, Kelman and Galloway. Among the poets you study are MacDiarmid, Muir, MacCaig, Morgan and Lochhead. Twentieth-century drama is also covered. The following year you will explore older Scottish literature and language, including the great medieval Makars (poets), Dunbar and Henryson, and the great morality play Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis; 18th-century writing, including Ramsay, Smollett and Burns, is an important part of the programme.

Prizes The Department of Scottish Literature was established in 1971, a unique initiative which followed Glasgow University's recognition that the subject demanded specific focus and investment. While other universities include Scottish literature as a component of the English literature curricula, we remain the only autonomous Department of Scottish Literature in the world. The Department was founded with the distinguished poet, critic and dramatist Alexander Scott as first Head of Department. In 1995, further demonstrating its support for the development of the Department, the University appointed Douglas Gifford to the first ever Chair in Scottish Literature. Dr Gerard Carruthers is presently Head of the Department, which now comprises six full-time members whose expertise covers the whole range of the subject. He has become one of the best known poets who has written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is now also in English and a 'light' Scots dialect, accessible to an audience worldwide.
