    Extractions: Lota is an ancient name for this fish, which has many common names. These include lawyer, eelpout, cusk, and freshwater cod. The last name is appropriate, because the burbot is a member of the cod family. Although sometimes referred to as dogfish, Michiganders more commonly use that name for the unrelated bowfin. Life History: The burbot is a winter spawner, moving into shallows at night and often spawning under the ice. Burbot can spawn in lakes or streams. Small burbot (up to a foot long) are often common in cold and cool streams, although they are rarely encountered by anglers. Burbot are typically nocturnal, and feed during the dead of night. Divers in Lake Michigan often find adult burbot resting in rocky crevices during the daytime. Large adults are common catches while ice fishing in some lakes. Diet: The diet of small burbot in streams such as the White River includes a variety of invertebrates (e.g., scuds, mayflies, caddisflies). Larger burbot are typically found in the Great Lakes. In Green Bay, fish made up 94% of burbot diet by volume. Alewife, bloater, smelt, and sculpin accounted for nearly 90% of fish consumed.

    Extractions: The discovery that fish oil may have unique benefits in the fight against coronary heart disease has stimulated a tremendous amount of research which this publication summarizes. Although the subject is complex, the study of fish oils is very worthwhile because it provides a totally new perspective on the relationship of diet to coronary heart disease. We have been inundated with oversimplified information about the effects of diet on blood cholesterol. It has led most people to believe that low blood cholesterol achieved by eating a low cholesterol diet is the one and only key to good health, particularly good heart health. Because of this, when the health benefits of fish oil were first reported, most people assumed that its primary benefit is the lowering of blood cholesterol. The health benefits of fish oil, however, are primarily related to the reduction of platelet activity, not the reduction of blood cholesterol. While some studies do show that fish oil moderately reduces blood cholesterol, it has been shown to increase blood cholesterol in many other studies. While attaining a low blood cholesterol is considered healthy, it is only one of many factors affecting heart disease which must be considered. This publication explains more fully the relationship of diet to coronary heart disease and the health benefits of fish oil.

Schexnayder was nominated for his role in the creation of artificial fishing reefs in Lake Pontchartrain and ongoing efforts to restore fisheries habitat in several local waterways. He helped to form the Pontchartrain Artificial Reef Working Group, which includes the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, and is active in other efforts to encourage outdoor recreational opportunities. Since 2001, this project has created five artificial reef sites in Lake Pontchartrain. "These newly added hard structures develop a bottom habitat for invertebrate organisms, creating a basis for a food chain for large vertebrate species such as speckled trout and flounder. These reefs would primarily be fish attractors. Nevertheless, the reef will generally provide a much more productive habitat than the surrounding soft lake bottom. They should enhance fishing opportunities in Lake Pontchartrain," Schexnayder said.
