    Extractions: The first recorded shipwreck along the North Carolina coast took place in 1585, when one of John White's flagships, the Tyger, wrecked at Ocracoke Inlet. In the 400 years since, historians estimate that over 1,000 ships have been lost along the coast, earning the treacherous waters the nickname "The Graveyard of the Atlantic." Mariners still dread the trinity of capes that characterize North Carolina's coast: Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and the aptly named Cape Fear. Like the points on a net, the capes arc far into the Atlantic, with submerged shoals extending even further. Geography combines with weather and circumstance to create a dangerous situation for mariners. The Gulf Stream, long used as an ocean highway from the Caribbean to Europe, comes perilously close to the Carolina coast. At Cape Hatteras, it brushes the cold Labrador Current, which runs parallel to the shore from northern climates. The resulting clash of waters creates the deadly Diamond Shoals, which extend 20 miles to sea and is only a few feet deep in places. Add the astonishing frequency of hurricanes and winter nor'easters that occur here, and the recipe for disaster is complete. Many famous wrecks and near-misses have occurred along the Carolina islands, some of them resulting in political and social change. In 1790, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, himself the victim of a close encounter off Cape Hatteras as a child, ordered the construction of the first lighthouse there.

Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first generation to have ready access to shipwrecks will be the last to enjoy them. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management. Information about these vessels and their remains is presented here to increase interest in protecting and preserving these and other historic Keweenaw wrecksites. For years these wrecks were slowly deteriorating due to vandalism and neglect. Now however, these historic wrecksites attract many divers and historians to the area and help build the local economy. Remember, it is illegal to remove anything from most Great Lakes shipwrecks and you can be prosecuted for doing so. Although not all wrecks on this site are actually in the Preserve, they are all still protected from illegal salvage by Michigan State law, and all are closely monitored. Many of these wreck locations were kept secret for years out of fear that they would be looted or damaged. Please respect the decision to publicise these historic wreck locations for your diving enjoyment by not stealing from them or damaging them. Last updated 8/24/2001 Take a look at Lake Superior through Cable America's Live Eagle Harbor Webcam The Keweenaw has hosted about 140 total losses since 1844. Of these about 40 have been located and positively identified. The vast majority may still have undiscovered remains which lie in the area. Continuing research is being carried out to locate historic vessel remains in and around the Keweenaw for archeological study and recreational diving and many unidentified hulls are being surveyed for identification purposes. Some people get so caught up in it, that they spend their entire lives researching, mapping, and searching for these lost vessels at sea. Nothing stops these people, even when tragic deaths result from their search; they just use that as an impetus to keep on going. Boat wrecks aren't restricted to the oceans of the world either, as many boats have been lost on the huge inland lakes, and of course a number of smaller ones are lost consistently on lakes across the world. I remember when I lived on Lake Superior when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down, and it was the main news for a long time in the midwest, as people from around the area populated a lot of the ship's crew. Gordon Lightfoot fans may remember he wrote a song about the tragedy named simply "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."

The fleet had been preparing since the previous February and included an armada of six vessels, well armed and carrying 360 soldiers. The armada plus eighteen other vessels were bound for tierra firme (the mainland). The raw data which is the source of this listing is freely available at the Office of Coast Survey's web site. The master list of shipwrecks available here is static and a snapshot of the shipwrecks listed in the AWOIS database file at the time it was downloaded. Additional shipwrecks added after that download will not appear here until the next download. Search results displayed on each shipwreck page are the result of a query to the complete AWOIS database for the section, currently there are over 4700 items listed in sections 8, 9, and 10.     Extractions: The evening of September 14 th hurricane force winds whipped seas to a mountainous furry off the southern New England Coast. Safe in their homes, residents of Westport Harbor witnessed bright lights in the sky west of Cuttyhunk, near where the Vineyard Sound Lightship , marking the entrance of Buzzard's Bay and Vineyard Sound, was moored. The next morning the Light vessel was gone. At first Coast Guard officials reported only that the lightship was "off Station". It being wartime and fearing public hysteria, a media blackout was in effect until the exact cause of the vessel's sinking could be determined.
