Extractions: Return to the World Olympians Association Home About WOA News ... Olympic history abounds with tales of athletes who overcame crippling adversity to win gold medals, but Karoly Takacs' comeback may be the best. Takacs was part of Hungary's world champion pistol shooting team in 1938 when an army grenade exploded in his right hand. Ten years later, he won the first two golds in rapid fire pistol, after teaching himself to shoot left handed. In a sport where the bulls eye looks about the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence, a sport where shooters compete amid a cacophony of noise and still concentrate on firing between heartbeats, Takacs' achievement tests the imagination. From just three shooting events at the 1896 Olympic Games to 17 today, the sport has grown steadily. In part this leap can be ascribed to advances in the technology of firearms and equipment, which ahve led to constant changes in the shooting competition. But it can also be ascribed to the passion shooters have for their sport. At the Olympics there are 17 events. Seven for women and ten for men.

Extractions: Water Polo The founding of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) in 1908 was a pragmatic response to an increase in international sporting events, crowned by the Olympic Games. At the first modern Olympics in 1896, three swimming contests were held. However, no universally accepted rules, regulations or definitions governed the swimming events. The Olympic Games competitions prior to FINA had included a variety of unusual events such as underwater swimming (1900), 200m obstacle swimming (1900) and plunge for distance (1904). Prior to the London Olympics, where a 100m pool was used, the ocean (1896), the River Seine (1900), and a little lake in St. Louis, USA (1904), had been used as Olympic sites. In order to unify the rules and create a forum for international meetings, the leaders of the eight attending countries (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden) met on 19 July 1908 at the Manchester Hotel, London, on the occasion of the Games of the IV Olympiad, and resolved to form a world-wide swimming association.

Extractions: by Hap Rocketto The National Rifle Association first distributed “Golden Bullets” to honor All-Americans in the sport of rifle shooting in 1936. Ironically it was the same year of the Berlin Olympic Games in which the United States would not enter a rifle team. However, two names on the inaugural team would become familiar to shooters in years to come. Robert K. “Sandy” Sandager of the University of Minnesota would rise to prominence as an international shooter in the post World War years. Ohio State University students Robert Hughes, and later his brother Roger, would become the first siblings to attain All-American honors in 1936 and 1940 respectively. While that in itself would be enough to earn a place in the shooting history book it was their father’s generosity that insured their place. Grover Hughes donated a pair of statuettes to be awarded to the winners of a two-division match fired at the 1931 NRA Instructor-Junior School at Camp Perry during the National Matches. The Hughes Trophies, as they were originally known, feature a small boy with hips slung and arms akimbo. The young lad’s cheeks are puffed out and his lips are pursed and from that stance comes the trophy’s better-known name: The Whistler Boy. As fate would have it the first recipients of the trophy, the original Whistler Boys, were the Hughes brothers, Robert won Division A for while Roger was the Division B champion.
