Over 110 kinds can be found in the United States. Lizards including iguanas, monitors, geckos, and horned lizards are the most common and fascinating reptile. In some areas of the US, people mistake lizards for salamanders. Salamanders and lizards are not related. Salamanders are amphibians like frogs. Lizards and snakes are closely related. Eastern Collared Lizard Size: The largest lizard is the Komodo monitor. It can grow to be over 10 feet long (3 meters). It can weigh nearly 300 pounds. The smallest lizard is a tiny gecko. Characteristics: Most lizards have dry, scaly skin, four legs, clawed feet, external ear openings, and a long tail. Lizards have a fragile, detachable tail. Many species have a weak point in their a tail. A slight tug or bump can be all that's needed to break it off. The thrashing tail distracts the predator. In some lizards, brightly colored tails increase the chance of losing a tail rather than losing a life. However, not all lizards lose their tails easily. For example, the collared lizard (above), has a sturdy tail that is rarely lost. Lizard tails help in balance and locomotion. Tails are also part of the social status and an area for fat storage. Losing the tail can be a serious problem for a lizard. If they live long enough, some lizards can grow back their tail.

It is relatively small with a black body with yellow stripes going to a bright blue tail. Blue-tailed skinks are usually about 4 to 8 centimeters long. When they become frightened they have the ability to pop their tail off and it will continue to wiggle and distract their predator while they run away. When young they have a dark black body with bright yellow stripes leading from the back of the neck down to the meeting of the bright blue tail. As the juvenile males age, they lose their yellowish stripes and their back starts to become a brownish black color, and they begin to grow a reddish color underneath the neck during the mating seasons. Females usually keep their blue tail for their whole life, though. It is thought that the bright coloring on the tail is intended to direct the predator's attention to it, instead of the vulnerable body.

Unless perhaps you feed them crickets and left the crickets in there overnight? I suggest moving him to a separate enclosure, line the bottom with papertowels (safe and to reduce the chance of infection) Keep the new enclosure really clean increase the heat a couple degrees and use polysporin on any open wounds. A herp vet is the best thing for him so that he can get the proper anti-biotic or other medication needed to heal. And they can help with what to do after that and what to look for. I am sorry this happened and I hope he is ok and gets through this. Good luck
