Soccer has long been regarded as the most popular sport in Germany. Since its founding, the Deutscher Fussball-Bund (German Football Association or DFB) has grown from 86 clubs to 27,000 and 6.3 million members across Germany. The founding of the DFB led to the organization of Germany's numerous regional clubs. The first national tournament to determine a national champion among these competitors took place in 1903. FC Lokomotive Leipzig became Germany's first recognized national champion with their defeat of DFC Prague. By 1908, Germany had signed on to the recently formed FIFA charter and established a national team for international competition. Even Germany's sporting life was not immune to the nation's involvement in the two World Wars. Organized national league play and Germany's participation in international competition was suspended during both conflicts.

Extractions: Many different cultures have played a sport similar to the modern game of soccer but no one can really say with any certainty when or where soccer began but it is known that the earlier variations of what later became soccer were played almost 3000 years ago. One of the earliest forms of soccer in which players kicked a ball around on a small field has been traced as far back to 1004 B.C. in Japan. The Munich Ethnological Museum in Germany has a Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C. that mentions games very similar to soccer that were played between teams from Japan and China. The Chinese kicked a leather ball ( hair-filled ) and it is known with certainty that a soccer game was played in 611 A.D. in the then Japanese capital, Kyoto. The Romans played a game that somewhat resembled modern soccer. The early Olympic games in Rome featured twenty-seven men on a side who completed so vigorously that two-thirds of them had to be hospitalized after a fifty-minute game. While historians kept records of events such as wars and religious movements they had very little interest in preserving the various origins of soccer or many other sports, so no one can say how soccer seems to have spread from Asia to Europe.

Home > Soccer History Recommend this Page The contemporary history of football spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the world's first football association was founded - The Football Association in England. Both forms of football stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. Their early history reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees and to which the historical development of football is related and has actually been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that playing a ball with the feet has been going on for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to believe that it is an aberration of the more "natural" form of playing a ball with the hands. Another form of the game, also originating from the Far East, was the Japanese Kemari, which dates from about 500 to 600 years later and is still played today. This is a type of circular football game, far less spectacular, but, for that reason, a 'more dignified and ceremonious experience, requiring certain skills, but not competitive ' in the way the Chinese game was, nor is there the slightest sign of struggle for possession of the ball. The players had to pass the ball to each other, in a relatively small space, trying not to let it touch the ground.

Extractions: Tags: Lincoln City Programme Fair Malcolm Allison is often recalled as the cigar-smoking, fedora wearing manager who led Crystal Palace to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1975-76, but beneath the high profile media image he was a key figure in the coaching and management revolution that transformed English football between the early 1950s and the end of the 1960s. Malcolm’s West Ham career was effectively ended in the autumn of 1957 when he was diagnosed as suffering from tuberculosis. He said of this period, “Everything was finished, I thought. I was in the sanatorium about nine months and I was a very quiet fellow when I came out with one and a half lungs.” He recovered sufficiently to return to play for the Hammers’ reserves then moved on to spend two seasons with Romford in the Southern League, also coaching the Cambridge University team at this time. The TB set back made Malcolm more determined than ever to succeed in the game and he seized the opportunity to take over as manager of Bath in the summer of 1963. He transformed the club’s fortunes, taking them to an FA Cup third round replay against Bolton Wanderers. After a season at Twerton Park Malcolm moved on to Plymouth accompanied by his skipper Tony Book and more success followed, with Argyle reaching the semi-finals of the Football League Cup in 1964-65. However, the club’s promotion charge stalled towards the end of the season and Malcolm departed, stepping up to become coach to Joe Mercer at Manchester City in the summer of 1965. Over the next five years City achieved tremendous success under the partnership of Mercer and Allison, winning the Division Two (1965-66), the Football League title (1967-68), FA Cup (1968-69), Football League Cup (1969-70) and European Cup Winners’ Cup (1969-70). Tony Book had followed Allison from Plymouth and two other crucial signings were Colin Bell and Francis Lee. Malcolm had now also established himself as a colourful character who made headlines in the national press, but when he took over as manager in his own right, in October 1971, he lasted less than two seasons in the job.

The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. And eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, the near-north, and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings, which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This worked together to establish the first standardized set of Football rules which soon became the standard in England. The next major development was the establishment of a knockout cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.
