Described by some historians as a revolutionary wave , the period of unrest began in France and then, further propelled by the French Revolution of 1848 , soon spread to the rest of Europe. Although most of the revolutions were quickly put down, there was a significant amount of violence in many areas, with tens of thousands of people tortured and/or killed. While the immediate political effects of the revolutions were largely reversed, the long-term reverberations of the events were far-reaching.

(December 2007) Revolutions of 1848 in the Italian states An image of non-unified Italy (1815-1870) Participants The Citizens of Italy and certain leaders Location Italy Date Result The Revolutions are failures, some states of Italy receive liberal constitutions, but they were abolished a short time after. The 1848 revolutions in the Italian states were revolutions in the states of Italy led by persons who desired a liberal government and wanted to rid Italy of the conservative Austrian rule. During this time period, Italy was not a unified country and was divided into many states ruled by the Austrian Empire . The conservative leadership of the Austrians and their desire to be free caused the people to stage a revolution to drive out the Austrians led by the state of Piedmont , one of the four states where Austrian leaders were forced to grant liberal rights. Also, uprisings in the Lombardy and Venitia, particularly Milan, forced the Austrian General Radetsky to retreat to the Quadrilateral fortresses.

Much of the revolutionary activity was of a nationalist character: the empire, ruled from Vienna , included Austrian Germans Hungarians Slovenes Poles ... Italians , and Serbs , all of whom attempted in the course of the revolution to either achieve autonomy, independence, or even hegemony over other nationalities. The nationalist picture was further complicated by the simultaneous events in the German states , which moved toward greater German national unity. Besides these nationalisms, liberal and even socialist currents resisted the empire's longstanding conservatism Ultimately, the revolutions failed, in part because the various revolutionaries had conflicting goals. Revolution in the Austrian lands ... The events of 1848 were the product of mounting social and political tensions after the Congress of Vienna of 1815. Extractions: Carl Schurz: A Look Back at 1848, 1907 One morning, toward the end of February 1848, I sat quietly in my attic chamber, working hard at my tragedy of Ulrich von Hutten , when suddenly a friend rushed breathlessly into the room, exclaiming: "What, you sitting here! Do you not know what has happened?" "No; what?" "The French have driven away Louis Philippe and proclaimed the Republic!" I threw down my pen-ant that was the end of Ulrich von Hutten. I never touched the manuscript again. We tore down the stair, into the street, to the market square, the accustomed meeting place for all the student societies after their midday dinner. Although it was still forenoon, the market was already crowded with young men talking excitedly. There was no shouting, no noise, only agitated conversation. What did we want there? This probably no one knew. But since the French had driven away Louis Philippe and proclaimed the republic, something of course must happen here, too. Some of the students had brought their rapiers along, as if it were necessary to make an attack or to defend themselves. We were dominated by a vague feeling as if a great outbreak of elemental forces had begun, as if an earthquake was impending of which we had felt the first shock, and we instinctively crowded together. Thus we wandered about in numerous bands-to the Kneipe , where our restlessness, however, would not suffer us long to stay; then to other pleasure resorts, where we fell into conversation with all manner of strangers, to find in them the same confused, astonished, and expectant state of mind; then back to the market square, to see what might be going on there; then again somewhere else, without aim and end, until finally late in the night fatigue compelled us to find the way home.

In France, the February revolution ended the Orleans monarchy (1830-1848) and led to the creation of the French Second Republic . The June days were a bloody but unsuccessful rebellion by the Paris workers against a conservative turn in the Republic's course. On December 2, 1848, Louis Napoleon was elected President of the Second Republic, largely on peasant support. Exactly three years later he suspended the elected assembly, establishing the Second French Empire , which lasted until 1871.

Marx was asked in the summer of 1851 by Charles Anderson Dana, managing editor of the New York Tribune , to write a series of articles on the German Revolution. Founded in 1842 by Horace Greeley, the Tribune was the most influential paper in the United States at the time. These articles were written by Engels at the request of Marx, who was then busy with his economic studies and felt, besides, that he had not yet attained fluency in English. Engels wrote the articles in Manchester, where he was employed, and sent them on to Marx in London to be edited and dispatched to New York. Thus, although Engels must be rightly considered their author, Marx took a big part in the preparation, for in their almost daily correspondence the chief points were discussed thoroughly between them. The articles appeared under Marx's name, and it was not until much later, when the correspondence between the two life-long collaborators became available, that the true circumstances were revealed. The contributions to the Tribune thus begun continued until 1862, and though Marx himself wrote most of the articles after 1852, Engels continued to help his friend by writing for him important articles on political and military affairs. When Marx's daughter, Eleanor, wrote the preface to the 1896 edition she was still under the impression that Marx had written the series.

On December 2 1851, followers of President Louis Bonaparte (Napoleon's nephew) broke up the Legislative Assembly and established a dictatorship. A year later, Louis Bonaparte proclaimed himself Emperor Napoleon III. Marx wrote The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon In this work Marx traces how the conflict of different social interests manifest themselves in the complex web of political struggles, and in particular the contradictory relationships between the outer form of a struggle and its real social content. The proletariat of Paris was at this time too inexperienced to win power, but the experiences of 1848-51 would prove invaluable for the successful workers' revolution of 1871.
