See all South Carolina articles South Carolina, a state in the southeastern United States. It extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachians between North Carolina and Georgia and, with an area of 32,007 square miles (82,898 km 2), is the smallest of the Southern states. South Carolina is a land of considerable variety, stretching from sandy beaches and subtropical islands along the coast through vast pine forests and fields of tobacco and cotton to the hazy peaks of the Blue Ridge. One of the original 13 colonies, South Carolina is rich historically and has preserved much of its heritage while building a modern industrial society. Before the Civil War it played a major role in the affairs of the nation and was the most ardent defender of Southern rights. Reminders of those days survive in the old, restored sections of Charleston, in graceful antebellum mansions, and in battle sites such as Kings Mountain and Cowpens. Representing the new South Carolina are sprawling factories, numerous hydroelectric plants, and the bustling port of Charleston—all bringing increased prosperity after many decades of economic problems.

It is divided by the fall line that runs through the center of the state from Augusta, Georgia, to Columbia and then to Cheraw, near the North Carolina border. The rise of the land from ocean to the fall line is very gradual: Columbia, 120 mi (193 km) inland, is only 135 ft (41 m) above sea level. In the extreme northwest, the Blue Ridge Mountains cover about 500 sq mi (1,300 sq km). The highest elevation is at 3,560 ft (1,086 m), in Sassafras Mountain.

These islands, the product of waves, currents and storms, are in a constant state of slow change. Fresh waters from inland rivers meet the ocean here to form an estuarine network of tidal creeks and marshes so rich in nourishment that wildlife, birds and fish of incredible variety come here to feed and breed. St. Helena Sound to the north has four channels, but otherwise is a vast, shallow delta of ever-changing sandy shoals. To the south, the water is deep. The Broad River flows into Port Royal Sound, which lies between St. Helena and Parris Island on the Beaufort side and Hilton Head Island on the far side. Port Royal Sound is the second deepest natural port on the Eastern seaboard. It was the arrival of the Union Navy into Port Royal Sound that caused the citizens of Beaufort to flee the city in 1861, after which it became a Union medical center. Among the areas covered in the term "South of Broad" are Hilton Head, Bluffton, Daufuskie, Callawassie, Okatie and Sun City, which straddles Beaufort and Jasper counties. "North of Broad" includes Beaufort and Port Royal, St. Helena, Lady's Harbor, Fripp, Hunting, Cat, Cane, Distant, Lost, Dataw and Polowana Islands, Sheldon and parts of Yemassee.

South Carolina includes portions of three major natural regions of the eastern United States: the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont Plateau, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Coastal Plain occupies about two-thirds of the state and rises gently to 500 feet from the Atlantic Ocean up to the Piedmont Plateau. Included in the Coastal Plain are the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina. The Piedmont is an upland area that rises gradually from 400 feet to 1200 feet along the northwestern edge. The Piedmont is separated from the Coastal Plain by a major fall line. The Blue Ridge Mountains, in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, meets the Piedmont. It is a mountainous and mainly forested region. The further east one moves, the flatter the land becomes in South Carolina. All of the major rivers in South Carolina flow generally southeastward across the state to the Atlantic Ocean. The three major rivers are the Santee, Great Pee Dee, and Savannah. There are no large natural lakes in South Carolina, but several have been created for hydroelectric power purposes. The three largest lakes are Lake Marion - 110,600 acres, Lake Moultrie - 60,400 acres, and Lake Murray - 50,000 acres.

Inland the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the elevation increases. Rainfall is abundant and well distributed throughout South Carolina. The Pee Dee, Santee, Edisto, and Savannah river systems drain the state, flowing from the highlands to the sea, creating rapids and waterfalls.
