Extractions: June 1st, 2010 How can a person with severe physical impairments live independently? The answer is with a personal assistant (PA). A PA does for the disabled person what the disabled person would normally would do if he or she were not disabled. These tasks include bathing, feeding, housekeeping and even note taking. All these tasks are performed under the instruction of the disabled person. A PA may be needed for a couple of hours a day or 24 hours continuously. It all depends on the needs of the disabled person. In countries such as Japan and Sweden, the government pays for the services of personal assistants. This has vastly improved the quality of life of disabled persons who are then able to achieve self determination over their own lives. The PA can either be personally recruited by the disabled person or come from a pool of PAs from a Centre for Independent Living (CIL) or private commercial entities specialising in provision of such services. PA service is consumer-based and the renumeration should be at market-rate for similar service rendered. The relationship between the disabled person and PA is that of employer and employee. This is to ensure an acceptable standard of service. The disabled person is the one to hire, train and even dismiss a PA based on performance.

With more than 4,000 SCI patients in its follow-up system, Magee has the clinical experience and the unique peer resources that no other Greater Philadelphia rehabilitation program can offer. Since 1978, Magee has partnered with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to form The Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley. This federally designated model system of care is one of only 14 in the country to provide coordinated lifetime care for people with SCI and their families. Magee's SCI program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Magee's SCI services include an expert clinical inpatient program; state-of-the-art assistive and therapeutic technology; unique outpatient therapy programs; and community reintegration services. Lifetime follow-up care is coordinated through Magee to address the unique health and community reintegration concerns of people with SCI. Magee's SCI inpatients can begin taking part in restorative programs immediately following their admission and initial evaluations. Therapies are offered seven days per week, and physician and nursing services are available 24 hours a day. Patients will be at Magee for varying periods of time, based on their goals and progress. Each member of the treatment team works with the patient and caregivers for a return to home that is both as safe and speedy as possible. Although there have been some major breakthroughs in medical research, the effects of a spinal cord injury are essentially irreversible. Unfortunately, the majority of spinal cord injuries cause permanent disability or total immobility and loss of sensation below the injury to the vertebrae, otherwise known as paralysis.
