CHARACTERISTICS An individual with a spinal cord injury may experience a loss of function, such as mobility or feeling. CAUSE The primary causes of SCI from trauma are: Motor vehicle accident – 44% Acts of violence – 24% Falls – 22% Sports injuries – 8% Spinal cord damage can also occur from diseases such as polio, spina bifida, Friedreich’s Ataxia. The extent of the communication breakdown is dependent on the severity and location of the injury. The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. For most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of functioning. SCI is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis, or pinched nerves. ETIOLOGY AND PROGNOSIS The effects of SCI depend on the type of injury and the level of the injury. SCI can be divided into two types of injury - complete and incomplete. A complete injury means that there is no function below the level of the injury; no sensation and no voluntary movement. Both sides of the body are equally affected. An incomplete injury means that there is some functioning below the primary level of the injury. A person with an incomplete injury may be able to move one limb more than another, may be able to feel parts of the body that cannot be moved, or may have more functioning on one side of the body than the other. With the advances in acute treatment of SCI, incomplete injuries are becoming more common.

New plants are being placed, weeds pulled, fertilization, pruning and shaping, a "spring cleaning" if you will. We are "doubling" the size of Jerry's Garden this year. The addition will be an "informal" garden with natural paths on each side of the planting beds. Seating arrangements will be placed throughout the area for contemplation and rest while the beauty of this new area is "taken in." Pictures will be added as the new section of Jerry's Memorial Garden takes shape. Lots of things to do but when it's a labor of love, time is not important. Hello, my name's Graham. I retired from the Greater Manchester Police with just short of 20 years service following a neck injury which occurred whilst on duty. This injury required neurosurgery and I much later discovered that it had left me with spinal cord damage. My condition having initially improved following surgery then deteriorated and I was medically retired for a second time. I accepted injury as an occupational hazard. I would rather I wasn't injured, but I accept that I took a risk and lost. A large number of officers are injured and it was a part of the job of which I was well aware. I have tried to make this site not only informative to visitors but also helpful to others suffering disabilities and there are a large number of disability related contacts and other links I have found useful on the 'Contacts' pages. Please note, I cannot answer questions from potential recruits as I am now totally out of date with recruiting policies. It is now unlikely that I will be updating this site much in the future. I would like to express my appreciation to the press both local and national for their assistance in allowing the use of photographs and articles on this site.

Gr owing up with a spinal cord injury (SCI) in 1980 was a frightening experience for me. There was no Americans With Disability Act or Internet at the fingertips to provide role models with my kind of injury to reassure me that I could still have a meaningful life, and I struggled for years to find direction. Through the love and support of my family, I found the courage to step out of the box people tried to put me in after my injury. It was scary, but I refused to believe that I would have to watch the world go by from the safety of the low expectations others had of me. I challenged myself and my injury's limitations, daring anyone to tell me that I couldn't be who I wanted to be. I have chosen to share my life through this web site because I believe my life has truly been blessed. I am not a super athlete or a famous actor; I am simply the girl next door. The life I have forged for myself is one that anyone can achieve after injury; it is evidence that there is more for people after SCI than a sick bed. I hope to inspire people with SCI to reject the victim label that has often accompanied the word "disability." I am challenging them to stop obsessing about what they can't do and start exploring what they want to do by experimenting with the things they can do so they can realize their own value.
