The information below states the benefits of healthy celebrations and some ideas for healthy party ideas/snacks. Typically, foods for school celebrations include cupcakes, candy, cookies and soda. So what's the harm? There is nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but unhealthy choices have become the norm rather than the exception. When teachers specifically ask, parents will supply healthy supplies for celebrations. Remember to check for food allergies and inform parents about foods to leave out to accommodate these special needs. Overall, our children's eating habits are poor. Only two percent of children meet all Food Pyramid recommendations. Most children do not eat enough fruits, vegetables or whole grains. Obesity rates among children are on the rise, with serious health consequences. Constant exposure to low-nutrient foods makes it difficult for children to learn how to make healthy food choices. By providing students with nutritious choices wherever food is available (including the classroom), schools can positively influence children's eating habits.

Though it's known for shamrocks, leprechauns and four-leaf clovers, the real story of St. Patrick's Day teaches students a bit about the history of Ireland. To help students understand who St. Patrick was and what he did, provide activities that focus on literacy. For younger students just learning to read, a Rebus story can help them incorporate pictures into texts and promote literacy. Rebus stories use a picture to take the place of a word in a sentence. This helps students use visual context clues in reading. An example of a Rebus sentence would be the following: St. Patrick worked with (picture of sheep here) and was called a shepherd. Using a picture of a sheep can help the emerging reader know what the text is about, even if he can't read every word. On St. Patrick's Day, teach students a little about St. Patrick's life and provide them with St. Patrick's Day Rebus pictures. Then, have students write their own stories or poems about St. Patrick that incorporate the Rebus images. Have students read their stories to the class when they're finished.
