The Greeks - the founding fathers of earliest Olympic Games - did not introduce swimming at the games, they were more interested in water sports, about which there is a lot of written and graphical evidences. The modern Olympic swimming era has developed itself only within the last 60 years, and is now swimming competitions are an integral part of Olympic competition. Swimming has a long history. But in ancient times, swimming was more a skill than a pleasure and was mostly associated with military operations. This might be a reason that swimming wasn't really promoted as a sport per se. The enthusiasm for swimming competitions wasn't carried abroad and this may be why there are huge gaps in our Olympic swimming history. Employing swimming in war against the Romans was described in Germanic history manuals. Swimming competitions are also known from history times. But the earliest Olympic Games excluded swimming from their agendas so why must we discuss in general Olympic swimming history, if nothing is known about it? These days we are grateful to the founders of the modern Olympic swimming era who have drawn attention to the absence of Olympic swimming history, and decided to include swimming events in Olympic Games. The year of 1896 may be considered as the beginning of the modern Olympic swimming era, when in Athens (Greece) the Olympic Games took place. It is worth mentioning that it was a "no-female" competition. Six competitions were planned but only four of them took place (100, 500 and 1200 m freestyle and one for sailors).

Though the act of swimming has been a staple of movement for countless centuries, only during the 19th century and the revival of international Olympic competitions that competitive swimming has gained international popularity. This is due in no small part to the international standardization of competition (in large part because of the Olympics) and the development of new techniques and equipment. Competitive swimming is a contest. The winner is the swimmer or team to cover a set distance in a smaller amount of time than any other swimmers or teams. Pools used for competitive swimming are divided horizontally into lanes. Each swimmer or team is designated on lane, and may not cross into any other lane. Paintings of humans' engaging in the act of swimming date to the stone age, around 7000 years ago.

Search Table of Contents The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating.

Extractions: The Sheep's Green bathing complex is still very evident. The large rectangular paddling pool is extremely popular with local children. Adjacent to it, a foot-bridge crosses a tributary of the Cam and the boys' and girls' bathing places lie to the left and right respectively. Walking across the field, another bridge separates the men's and ladies' quarters. For the men a five-stage diving board reaching up some fifteen feet, a water chute and a springboard with a tremendous run up ensured the success of the attraction (pictured above). Sadly, river bathing officially came to an end here in the 1960s and interest was transferred to the open-air pool on Jesus Green. To find out more, click below:

Extractions: Home Sports Swimming ... Women's Swimming History By Tanya Wyr eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Women have been instrumental in swimming history since its beginnings as a sport. Often they had to fight against discrimination and restrictive social mores to compete in their sport. Yet women achieved much and continue to excel in swimming. Swimming as a sport has its origins in England. By 1837, swimming races were held in pools in London. In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport, but only for men. In 1912, swimming became an Olympic sport for women, too. Prior to 1912, many spectacular swimming feats were performed by women. In 1877, Eliza Bennett swam across the Hudson River in New York City. In 1880, Agnes Beckwith treaded water for 30 hours in a London whale tank. The first Olympic swimming medals in 1912 to women went to Fanny Durack of Australia for the 100M freestyle race. Belle Moore, Jennie Fletcher, Annie Speirs and Irene Steer of Great Britain won the 4x100M relay.

Extractions: Posts Comments You are here: home New Zealand Swimming History Auckland Winter Champs Give Us A Break Mate By David Last week’s Swimwatch story has prompted some interesting correspondence. You may recall the story was about the Auckland Winter Championships. In it we mentioned some of the characters that have swum for the West Auckland Aquatics swim team in the past. Regular readers may also remember that several weeks ago we published an article about one of New Zealand’s master track coaches, Arch Jelley. The two stories were unusually linked by the arrival of this photograph in our email mailbox. There may be more to this photograph than I know. However, even the bits that I do know make it a genuine piece of New Zealand sporting history. As you can see the picture was taken in 1980 and shows the Sunnybrae Normal Primary School’s Auckland championship swim team. You would be excused for thinking there was nothing too remarkable about that. However, at least three members of the team make the photograph unusual.

Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Swimming has been part of the Games since the beginning of the modern Olympiad in 1896 but the first two Games were rather quirky aquatic affairs, and exclusively male. The first was a 100 metres (or thereabouts) race between three Greek sailors across the Bay of Zea near Piraeus (not far from a place where cave drawings offer evidence of an ancient sport) that started with the rivals jumping from a rowing boat. The winner was Ioannis Malokinis in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The second Games, in Paris, involved races up the Seine, one in which obstacles were placed in the way of swimmers and one where the point was to swim the whole distance under water - not much fun for the spectators! Still, at least the races were held with the tide, not against it. That helped John Arthur Jarvis on his way to capturing the 4,000 metres freestyle (an event never seen before or since) in less than an hour - a time many of those who swim for charity these days would be quite proud of.
