Web Resources Common areas of concern in the classroom: Remember: FAS/FASD students are persons with some degree of brain damage. Children with FAS/FASD may have trouble expressing themselves. Be aware of their body language and know the warning signs for frustration, sadness, anger and other potentially hurtful emotions. Concepts that may be problematic include decision-making, time, impulsiveness and distinguishing between public and private behaviors. Memory tasks are difficult. Children with FAS/FASD may not be able to generalize information they have learned from one day to the next. It is important to make eye contact (unless this produces anxiety), repeat things and use short instructions. Math skills are difficult. Most students do not advance beyond a second- or third-grade level.

The term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is commonly used to cover the range of effects seen in children whose mothers drank alcohol during their pregnancy. FASD can include physical, mental, behavioral and learning disabilities, with developmental delays and possible lifetime implications. Most children with FASD have normal or above normal IQs (only 15% having IQs below 70) and the symptoms that show up in the classroom are first seen as "behavior problems." The symptoms represent permanent brain damage from alcohol persisting into adulthood and include attention and memory deficits, hyperactivity, difficulty with abstract concepts, poor problem solving skills, immature social behavior, lack of emotional control, poor impulse control and poor judgment. Understanding that these behaviors are not within the child's control and can be made worse by abuse and neglect, teachers may have few strategies for dealing with inappropriate behavior apart from being more forgiving when it happens.

That concept lies at the heart of a good-news story recently brought to this city by journalist and author, Andrew Nikiforuk. His putative topic – Five Ways to Improve Public Education: A Talk About Taboos – sounded mild, but the content of the measures was quite revolutionary. Together, they boil down to a basic restructuring of control in the public school system. A native of North Battleford, Nikiforuk once taught at the Winnipeg Child Development Centre, where he adopted the mantra, “There are no children who can't learn to read, only those who haven't been taught.” His first stop on this return trip, many award-winning articles and books later, was David Livingstone School, one of two elementary schools whose amazing success in teaching children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome has attracted national attention.
