Their pamphlets state that they hope "to forge reasonable beliefs for ourselves without turning religion into no more than an intellectual exercise; to respect all persons while feeling free to disagree openly with points of view expressed." In 1961 the Unitarians merged with the Universalist Church of America to form the Unitarian Universalist Association of North America. They are affiliated with the Unitarian General Assembly in London, and the International Association of Religious Freedom worldwide. A RELIGION OF DENIAL THE MERGER AND RESULTING CHANGES The Universalist Church believes in Universal salvation, that is, that all will attain to heavenly glory regardless of beliefs. The Unitarians did not necessarily believe in any kind of an afterlife. A compromise hammered out during the merger eliminated the name of Jesus from the association's statement of principles, according to Time Magazine of June 27th, 1983. This article also reported that a proposal was put forth that..."reference to God be replaced with a statement that the churches "reflect various forms of Theism, Christianity, Humanism, Feminism and other religious traditions"." The article concluded with these words "Over the past seven years the U.U.A. has experienced a decline of nearly 31% (to 136,500), the most severe membership loss ever suffered by any church body in North America."

    Extractions: Whitney Moore Young, Jr. When John was the minister of the First Universalist Church in Rochester, New York, I was on the Church School Committee. In the autumn of 1972, there was a need to have some activity for the Sunday School children during the time between Sunday School and the time parents took them home. Both the children and the parents came to the "Coffee Hour," but the children needed something to do while waiting for the parents to take them home. This was very important! I suggested that we have a stamp club for the children, which, hopefully would siphon off most of the children, thereby reduce most of the destructive behavior that had taken place. Well, as so often happens, it was my suggestion and I became the leader of the Junior Stamp Club. This activity, held in a quiet room, was very quieting and instructive. The scheme worked well, considering their former behavior. I offered them U.S. and foreign stamps; the children could look through boxes of stamps to choose which ones they wanted to put into their collection.

Since its inception in August 1994, topics of discussion have ranged from the inspirational to the silly to the practical and back again. (This is pretty typical of U-U discourse.) The group (sruu to its friends) is robomoderated , a technique that passes all submissions through a validation program before sending them out to the world, to enforce as necessary the rules that the group runs under. A board of five volunteer moderators help maintain the group and encourage a level of respect and civility appropriate to a church-related group. There's more detail on the moderation policy in the FAQ Before posting anything, please read the group for a little while so you understand the tone and topics of the group, and read the FAQ If you don't get the confirmation message, most likely either your news program isn't mailing messages correctly, or the From: line in your message is set wrong and doesn't have your correct mail address.
