Extractions: Home Requirements for Teacher Certification Tests for Teacher Certification By Hannah T. Wahlig eHow Contributor updated: September 24, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Fotolia.com Teacher certification exams are a part of an application for licensure. All states require professional educators to apply for a state-issued teaching license. Though requirements vary from state to state, all states require teachers to demonstrate competency in both their subject area and in best practices. One way states determine teacher eligibility is through standardized tests, each of which offers a different kind of teaching certification. Many states create their own state-specific certification exams that a teacher must pass in order to qualify for licensure. State exams typically include a basic skills test, such as California's Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), as well as several options for content area exams. They include the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), for example, which offers subject area exams in English, biology, chemistry, history, health and art. Most state exams have a timed multiple choice format with a supplemental writing composition section. States often require all teachers to pass a basic skills test. Secondary teachers must also pass a subject area exam, and elementary teachers must pass a series of literacy and general subject area exams. Some states participate in interstate agreements in which the scores for one state-specific exam may be submitted for certification in a different state.
