Fotolia.com One Veterans Day craft idea is to have students make representations of the flag. Veterans Day began in 1919 as Armistice Day, and was a day of observance that commemorated the veterans of World War I, according to Apples 4 The Teacher. In 1938, it became a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed its name to Veterans Day and the holiday became focused on honoring all military veterans of all wars and conflicts. For a third grade glass, there are several patriotic Veterans Days crafts you can have students make. One of the simplest options for a Veterans Day craft is to you have your third graders draw pictures of patriotic items, such as an American flag, a bald eagle or the Statue of Liberty. Alternatively, you can print out patriotic-themed templates and have your students color them in. For examples, visit Apples 4 The Teacher. You can also give your students glue sticks and glitter so they can make stars and other items shimmer. For this craft you will need to provide each of your third graders with 11 Popsicle sticks, white and red paint, a paintbrush, a blue square of construction paper and glue. According Enchanted Learning, have your students paint five of their Popsicle sticks red and four of them white. Once dry, have them glue each painted stick-in an alternating fashion-perpendicular to one of their unused sticks (which, will serve as the "flag pole"). Help them break their last sticks in half, so they can glue the pieces to the back of their flags as supports. Then, have your third graders glue the blue paper to the corners of their flags. To make stars, they can use the white paint or cut out stars from sheets of white paper and glue them on.
