Hurricanes swirl in a counterclockwise direction. Both the Air Force Reserve's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron located at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss., and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Aircraft Operations Center at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa operate Hurricane Hunter aircraft. These 10-hour missions for collecting critical data on wind direction and speed, air pressure, temperature and humidity help National Hurricane Center forecasters predict the hurricane's strength, as well as when and where it will hit land. An electronic instrument called a dropsonde is dropped from the plane to gather weather data, including wind direction and speed, air pressure, temperature, humidity and GPS position, as it falls to the ocean surface, creating a vertical profile of the storm. Up to four dropsondes can be deployed at one time from up to 38,000 feet, sending the information to the aircraft. This atmospheric data is collected by the Hurricane Hunters six times per second and bundled into 10-second data sets. That information is then sent in messages containing 10 minutes' worth of data to the National Hurricane Center and made available to weather forecasters.
